Cape Town - The African Pride Crystal Towers Hotel in Century City will remain closed until safety inspections are complete and fire damage is repaired.

The first floor sustained water and smoke damage on Sunday, said Mark Satterfield on behalf of Marriott International, owners of the hotel group.

Four people were hospitalised and six adults and three children were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene on Sunday, Traveller24 reported.

The fire was contained and limited to the first floor of the hotel, Satterfield said.

"The fire originated in a sauna room of the spa."

Satterfield said the cost of repairs was still being determined.

Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Lane said while the origin of the blaze has been determined, the cause is being investigated.

A firefighter hurt his shoulder when part of the first-floor ceiling collapsed, Lane said.
