Sheryl Cwele hands herself in

2012-10-04 09:57

Pietermaritzburg - Convicted drug dealer Sheryl Cwele handed herself to authorities at the KwaZulu-Natal High Court on Thursday morning.

Cwele, who is set to start a 20-year prison term, did not speak to waiting journalists.

Smartly dressed in a black dress and wearing a black and white floral coat, Cwele entered the building.

She was expected to be taken to Durban's Westville prison in a police van later.

Cwele and her co-accused Frank Nabolisa failed to have their convictions overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal on Monday. The court also increased their sentences from 12 to 20 years.

Cwele was given three days upon receipt of the judgment to hand herself to authorities.

The two were found guilty of drug dealing by the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg in May 2011.

Both had pleaded not guilty to conspiring to deal in drugs, to procuring a woman, Charmaine Moss, to collect drugs in Turkey, and to procuring another woman, Tessa Beetge, to smuggle cocaine from South America.

Nabolisa had been in custody until now. Cwele was out on R100 000 bail. She is the ex-wife of State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele.

Although the current public consensus is that she will get medical parole any day now, it is good to see that she has eventually handed herself in.

      stfrancisbay - 2012-10-04 10:04

Not sure who is going to be out quicker ...her or the SA T20 cricket team ;-)

      Rabbler.Rouser - 2012-10-04 10:05

She is probably too young and not well enough connected to utilise that privelege. Or maybe she doesn't play golf. No doubt she will probably try the Shabby Shaik trick.

      koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-10-04 10:05

      Depends, can she play golf?

Never mind Sheryl, it is 20 years and a couple of weeks to Mangaung.

      lindiwe.ntshingila - 2012-10-04 10:20

She'll be out in 10 years as they only serve half the sentence...and if she "behaves" then maybe out in 8 years...that's the reality. I dont know where this halving the sentence comes from, but its a sad reality!!!

Sheryl Cwele you a an embarrassement to this country. A woman and polotician who contributes to the infestation of SA with drugs. do you have an idea of the harm you have caused? the heartaches you have caused families? when parents have drug addicts for kids? do you know the effects of drug addiction? what it does to a family unit? you will pay heavily for your sin of selfishness and vanity whether you remain in prison or not

  • nico.vanderwesthuizen1 - 2012-10-04 10:34
