Johannesburg - A man was knocked down and killed while cycling from Trichard to Secunda, Beeld reported on Monday.

Christo Hattingh, 26, a member of Secunda's Sasol cricket team, was cycling back to Secunda shortly after 1am on Sunday, following a match against IFS Witbank.

He was wearing a reflective vest when he was struck by a Nissan Navara and killed, opposite the Albany bakery along the main road between the two towns.

He was dragged a few metres. The driver then apparently reversed over his body and fled the scene. The car was found abandoned on Sunday afternoon.

When police found the owner he claimed the car had been stolen the previous day. However, no case had been opened with police.

The driver was not arrested. Police were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

The owner of the car has many questions to answer

1AM. What are the odds alcohol was involved?

But the article was written by a drunkard, Mbombela is more 200km from Secunda and Trichard

Indeed! How does Mbombela fit into it? Also, it is still called Nelspruit (if the author is refering to the City itself)

trichardt is literally a street away from secunda, not even 3km! nelspruit is almost 350km away! journalists, you really need to start to think before you just write. they are busy with roadworks on that particular road, visibility really poor & if you don't know the road, dangerous. when travelling that time in the morning, sure there might have been drinking involved, but truth is we won't know untill the driver comes clean. there is only 2 'clubs' in trichardt. also, if the navara originated from secunda why if someone stole it, would it still be in the same area? only 3 or4 navara bakkies in town i know of...r.i.p.

The first two paragraphs are confusing

What the hell is a cyclist doing on a national highway at 01h00 in the first place. Were there witnesses or did the deceased make a note of the vehicle that hit him.

There could be many answers to this question. Not everyone can afford cars or why was a car on the road 1am in the morning (same reason as the cyclist, both have a right to use the road...selfrighteous much). Whatever the answer, a person (someone's loved one) was killed. If by accident, fine, but then own up. What this driver did was outrageous, but hey, let's leave a crap comment like "what the hell is a cyclist doing" on the road at 1am.

Were exactly did this accident take place? There are nanmes allover the place and the distance between them is far.

  • ani - 2011-03-21 16:20

reply to wow, that was what i've tried te explain, secunda & trichardt is next to each other, trichardt can be called another extension of secunda. while mbombela is nelspruit, also mpumalanga but 350km away. accident happened on the road which links secunda & trichardt...he played for the sasol cricket team & they went to celebrate in trichardt afterwards.

To everyone who had something to say about why Christo was on a bicycle at 1am on a public road. First of all, Christo did not have anyone to rely on for transport back home. He was an orphan. He was a very friendly person who never did anything wrong to anyone! The person who drove over him must have been drunk and trying to prank him! They know it was a Navara because it was found abandoned in a field the next day. The owner claims it was stolen when he/she was confronted about it! The worst thing about all of this is that whoever killed him actually hit him with the vehicle, dragged him for a distance and then reversed over his body! Secondly, to the idiot who wrote this article, please make sure of the facts before you write stuff in a newspaper! Your supposed to be a professional. If anyone know anything about this incident, please contact the police station in Secunda so that the person responsible can be brought to justice.
