Potchefstroom - A North West professional cyclist has lost a R100 000 bicycle in a fire that broke out at Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom on Monday night.

North West Education MEC Wendy Matsemela said the fire broke out at 21:00 on Monday.

"There were three boys in the hostel when the fire broke out; the other 40 were in the study room. The three boys were taken to a place of safety with the other 40. There were no casualties. One pupil who is a professional cyclist lost his R100 000 bicyle in the fire," she said on Tuesday.

The cause of the fire is not known, she said.

A trust fund has been established to help the department to renovate the hostel.

On August 24, three girls died in a fire that broke at North West Secondary School for the Deaf in Leeudoringstad near Wolmaransstad; 54 others were admitted to hospital for smoke inhalation and minor injuries they sustained when they jumped from the first floor in a bid to escape the flames.

The three girls were laid to rest at the weekend in Klerksdorp, Mahikeng and Kuruman.
