Johannesburg - Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane cannot provide a reliable figure for the number of title deeds issued in the province since 1994, the DA claimed on Tuesday.

"It would appear that only 10% of the roughly 800 000 houses built were issued with title deeds since 1994," Democratic Alliance MPL Janet Semple said in a statement.

She was commenting on Mokonyane's answers to DA questions in the provincial legislature about title deeds allocated in the province in the past five years.

Semple said that in September, a parliamentary reply by Human Settlements Minister Connie September to DA MP Patty Duncan revealed that Gauteng's title deed backlog was 220 279 in 2010.

September had listed estimated backlogs in all the provinces in her response.

"It is clear that the title deeds backlog is far greater than even [September or Mokonyane] can fathom," Semple said.

The ownership of a title deed promoted economic and social stability in society, she said.
