DA: Probe Lotto business

Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance has for a third time written to the Minister of Trade and Industry asking him to initiate an independent inquiry into the Lotto.

DA social development spokesperson Janet Semple said several claims had been made by charities that the National Lotteries Board (NLB) was declaring unpaid funds as having been paid out.

This was in addition to a recent scathing performance audit by the Auditor-General into grant management by the NLB.

"We will continue to write to him as we accumulate evidence until it becomes impossible for him not to act," said Semple.

The NLB and the minister had no right to treat the charities who worked so hard to care for South Africa's marginalised citizens with such contempt, or to refuse to account to the public about how Lotto money was spent.
