Johannesburg - The DA extended condolences to the families of those killed in a bus crash in Makhado, Limpopo, on Friday morning.

"The Democratic Alliance sends its deepest condolences to the families of 11 people who passed away this morning in an accident on the N1 road in Limpopo," provincial leader Jacques Smalle said in a statement.

"They are in our thoughts and prayers."

Limpopo roads and transport department spokesperson Jimmy Machaka said earlier the accident, involving a bus and a Toyota Corolla, happened on the N1 near the Capricorn toll plaza, near Makhado, around 02:00.

The bus was apparently overtaking on a barrier line when it collided with the Corolla.

Six people were taken to hospital in critical condition, 11 more were seriously injured, and 30 were slightly injured.

Smalle urged motorists to be extra cautious as the festive season approached.

"We further call on the law enforcement agencies to escalate their presence on the roads and take swift actions against those who violate road rules."
