DA to help rape victim, 5, get counselling

2012-06-19 15:49

Johannesburg - The DA in Limpopo will help a 5-year-old girl and her family to get psychological counselling after she was raped three times, it said on Tuesday.

"At her age, this child should be receiving love and nurturing from her family and community instead of being made a victim to the most heinous crime possible against a living human being," Democratic Alliance MPL Desiree van der Walt said after visiting the child on Monday.

A man appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Friday for allegedly raping the girl in Mmamatsha village, Ga-Molepo, on Wednesday

The case was postponed until July 20. The man remains in custody.

The girl was also apparently raped in December 2010, but the case was provisionally withdrawn pending DNA results and a social worker's report.

She was raped again in May this year. A 28-year-old man was arrested in connection with this incident and is to appear in court on June 26.

Van der Walt said the DA would correspond directly with Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa about why it was taking such a long time to release the DNA results.

DA members would picket outside the court each time the girl's alleged rapists appeared, she said.

On Monday, the African National Congress in Limpopo described the case as troubling and "inhumane".

"We cannot continue to have these kinds of inhumane crimes being committed against children and women and any other victims of such violent, gruesome acts that strip victims of their dignity," said ANC provincial spokesperson Makonde Mathivha.

Well done DA for doing something to help this little while while the cANCer remain 'troubled'.

      Bardy - 2012-06-19 15:58

I am afraid this is but one of many cases. The DA would not be able to help everyone unless they have control of government. But alas... The ANC masses do not care about a better future for everyone. They are too blinded by the their empty promises. I fear that hope for this country is little!

      Ray - 2012-06-19 17:05

I hope they also put her on ARV's in case she was exposed to AIDS. These perpetrators should be permanently removed from society, preferably killed very slowly.

      Bless Boswell - 2012-06-19 18:25

If this scumbag goes to jail, you, your family, me, my family and the rest of SAs law abiding citizens will pay good taxes to keep him in jail. You should be terminated.

  • Susan - 2012-06-19 16:09

This child will need counselling for the rest of her life....

  • lownabester - 2012-06-19 16:14

DA to the rescue, But how sick can these scum be, Its inhumane, Kill them slowly.

  • - 2012-06-19 16:21

Although I commend the DA for stepping up and helping this poor girl, they do get a lot of *good publicity* for this...makes you wonder....I hope the reasoning behind this is sincere.

      Erna - 2012-06-19 16:27

At least they are there to help no matter what the reason. Where is the useless minister of everyone except men? Would you say the same if she made the effort to help?

      Andres - 2012-06-19 16:37

Same could be said for Mmusi Maimane's intervention in the two model's racist tweets' scandal. However, after they met and discussed reconciliation and non-racialism, they both apologised and the story died. Publicity or not, doing the right thing, is still the right thing. If doing good gets publicity, more power to the organisation doing so. Had the ANC offered psychological help to the victims, you could be assured they'd be trumpeting "Power to the People, ANC Lives, ANC Leads" from every mountaintop.

      Oom - 2012-06-19 16:43

You know what JMAN, I feel sorry for you..!Of course the DA will be getting publicity for this assistance. That’s obvious, but don’t let it blind you to the fact that they are there, whilst those who should be there are absent. Don’t be fooled by the thought that this is just a stunt to get noticed...Last week a young man lost his motor bike in a fire, there were people there to assist as well. Many from the DA too, but the presents of any meaningful assistance is absent from the ruling party...yet you still vote for them...I just for the life of me, don’t understand .WHY..???

      daniel.kahn.50 - 2012-06-19 16:51

Kind of like the publcity zuma and the ANC got when they marched against the spear. Pity they aren't getting publicity for marching for this poor girl instead!!!

      Andres - 2012-06-19 17:05

Wow... So spot on Daniel. Why the outrage at an abstract penis, but no outrage regarding real and horrific juvenile rape!?! Yes, some ruling party supporters will scream "publicity stunt." Priorities horribly skewed. Actions speak louder than words, so what are the ruling party's actions telling us...? - 2012-06-19 17:11

I think you all misunderstood me. And when I read my comment above, I see why. I agree with all the statements, and of course agree totally that the actions the DA are taking in this case are awesome! Its just...why THIS case? In politics you never know. Its all I'm saying. And krummel - no need to feel sorry for me. I'm ok.

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-06-19 16:34

I hope to see DA members picketing outside, time for DA members to step up and stop being a party of moaners but do'ers..

When you don't have the countries wealth at your fingertips, the least you can do is voice the issues, to bring it to the attention of the people IN CHARGE OF THE COUNTRY.

  • joe.farmer.92775 - 2012-06-19 16:59

all people should know is that a little girl has received help well done Desiree

  • BulletProof. - 2012-06-19 17:01

ANC JUST TALKS, no action, great initiative from the DA to help this litle girl, otherwise she will grow up confuse and end up to be a miserable person or even worst.

  • nadir.somai - 2012-06-19 17:03

DA to help victim of rape !!!!! not DA to help rape victim !

      smili.fication - 2012-06-19 17:37

You actually have a point there. Shoddy editing news24

  • braamc - 2012-06-19 17:19

Savages. Hateful f(*7cken bastard, may you die a slow death. All the best to the child

  • keith.recore - 2012-06-19 17:21

fantastic, I hope incorporated in this will be means for her to try and protect herself as she ages. Simply fantastic, she needs every chance in the world to overcome this. Hopefully the 13 year old who was babysitting her for one of the attacks is not another victim as well.

  • eleanor.butler.18 - 2012-06-19 17:29

My gardener has just told me how many little children are being raped in the informal and RDP settlement near our town every afternoon after school when moms and dads are out working and children are on their own without supervision, or being raped by those who are supposed to look after them. Usually these deeds are by jobless young men loitering about.

      BulletProof. - 2012-06-19 17:40

I agree we don't know most of this stories, only when they catch the perpetrators.

      Bless Boswell - 2012-06-19 18:21

Sure doesn't say much about the way these young louts are being raised. Whatever happened to family values?

  • Nathaniel - 2012-06-19 17:47

If there are actions which undermine the black man, this surely is the one . Not the spear. I would support and encourage every self respecting black man to rise against these barbaric acts. These acts erode our form of trustworthyness, and our trait of being answerable to our loved ones. This include our communities. Well done DA.

  • toofaan.monsoon - 2012-06-19 18:08

Thank you DA. I cannot for the life of me fathom how to counsel a 5 year old in a case like this though. May I please ask if news 24 could keep close to this story and if the DA could campaign for a minimum of a life sentence for any child rape convict. (Afraid that I know that my preference for a death sentence will never be accomodated).

      Bless Boswell - 2012-06-19 18:19

I wonder why the death penalty for rape was scrapped when the ANC came to power. Do you perhaps think its because rape is so common within some black communities? Or perhaps because women or girl children are not highly valued in some black communities? Our president has remained very quiet about this issue. Makes one wonder ...

      toofaan.monsoon - 2012-06-19 18:30

@Bless : My personal opinion is that it's all about votes, shadow games, insecurity and denialism. I can understand how this state of affairs came about, but I can never condone it. I'm a father and, from that standpoint, there is never any such thing as redressing past injustices etc that can ever justify not simply killing an animal that rapes a 5 year old. Some would say my way of thinking is barbaric. I say that if you live amongst barbarians, your only way of survival is to respond to these atrocities in a way that barbarians understand.

  • Virginia - 2012-06-20 07:58
