Durban - The DA is demanding that the KwaZulu-Natal health department release all information related to a tender that saw the department lease a truck and trailer mobile clinic for R52m.

The DA’s provincial health spokesperson Dr Imran Keeka said that he had submitted a Public Access to Information Application (Paia) in a bid to force KwaZulu-Natal’s health department to release tender information regarding the procurement of mobile hospitals in the province.

“We have repeatedly asked the MEC to share this information with us. We have done so in the form of written parliamentary questions and through an appeal directly to the MEC during last weeks’ health budget debate. Yet no answers have been forthcoming,” said Keeka.

The province’s health department will have 30 days to respond to the Paia application.

In January, the SA Press Association reported that the department had awarded a R61m tender to two companies.

Of that amount, R52m is being spent on leasing a truck and trailer that has a standard X-ray machine, which at the end of the three-year lease, the department will not even own.

Two companies - Mzansi Lifecare and Mobile Satellite Technologies - won the tenders.
