Dad accidentally kills daughter in robbery

2012-05-18 15:43

Johannesburg - A Centurion man accidentally shot dead his young daughter on Friday morning when their house was broken into, Gauteng police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the man was awoken by a commotion at his house on Glover Street.

"He went upstairs to fetch his firearm and while he was there, he heard the commotion again near the door. He fired a shot which hit and injured his... daughter," said Dlamini.

"She was taken to hospital in a critical condition, where she died. We have opened a case of culpable homicide."

Dlamini said the five robbers fled the premise with a handbag, which belonged to the man's wife. No arrests had been made.

Beeld newspaper reported that the father had heard dogs bark, went downstairs to investigate and spotted a robber in the house, in the early hours of Friday morning.

He ran back up to his bedroom, slammed the door and took his firearm from the safe. At that stage, his 8-year-old daughter had woken up and wanted to go into her parent's bedroom.

When she turned the door knob, her father thought it was one of the intruders and fired a shot.

He opened the door and found her lying there. According to Beeld she had been shot in the head.

How dreadful. I really feel for this family. We don't realise the stress we live under constantly until something like this happens. The crime rate in this country is off the charts, with no relief in sight...

      Tuco - 2012-05-18 16:06

And here we have our so called leaders expressing disgust at a stupid painting. instead of DOING something to prevent this sort of madness. *so mad* Damn, I cannot even imagine what the parents are going through.

      bill.vanzyl - 2012-05-18 16:18

Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful... There are no words that can express the horror of an incident like this.

      Squeegee - 2012-05-18 16:20

Pythagoras, you are truly an idiot. This is not a movie. Finding robbers in your house and running to get your gun - the next moment the door opens - who do you think is there? This guy did everything he could for his family. I suppose you would have donned your superhero costume and attacked all five robbers with your xray vision...

      kingsleyb - 2012-05-18 16:26

This is a terrible incident. My heart goes out to this poor girls family. But one has to admit that taking a pot shot without actually seeing your target was foolish. RIP little one.

      David - 2012-05-18 16:37

This badly run country is stressing everyone to the limit...we have electricity outages every week...we have had a neighbour murdered last year...I phone the Police about illegal dumping - they don't bother...roads - nobody bothers...loitering,arson, people watching other peoples movements - nobody bothers....taxis driving at high speeds - nobody bothers. The list can go on almost forever. Those bloody criminals which caused this incident should be hung and every other person in this country causing serious crime should be hung - finish and klaar....

      Boer - 2012-05-19 03:08

Will pray for this man cause his going to need all the prayers we can give. HEAVY SAD SITUATION.

      marcelminnaar - 2012-05-19 12:44

I was at Unitas Hosp Friday afternoon, one of the parents whos daughter was also in the child care facility told me that it was extremely dreadful. It was an accident it wasn't suppose to happen. I feel very sorry for the family and I send my condolences

      Thapelo - 2012-05-19 14:15

i got 100 thumbs down for say " may she rest in peace". because i used a african name and the picture was of an african person. any African voting DA must read news24 before voting so that they dont regret it.

      rbphiri - 2012-05-19 15:42

The five robbers fled the premise with a handbag, which belonged to the man's wife. If found the suspects should also face charges of culpable homicide, like the father. I think the charges on him should be dropped, it's punishment enough that he killed his own daughter accidently, but under section 299 of the penal code in our constitution, whoever causes death by doing an act with the intention of causing death, or with the intention of causing such bodily injury as is likely to cause death, or with the knowledge that he is likely by such act to cause death, commits the offence of culpable homicide. It's a double edge sword this scenario, but i feel sorry for the man.

      Iceberg - 2012-05-19 18:02

Thapelo, don't pay attention to the thumbs down. It's the anti God brigade not necessarily people of a specific race doing that.

  • drishworth - 2012-05-18 15:55

What an absolute tragedy - my heart goes out to this poor family. Makes one wonder how a family could ever recover from something like this.

  • Harold - 2012-05-18 15:57

This is a very sad story and is indicative of the fear that the citizens of this country live in.My heart goes out to parents. While this goes on the great crime fighters led by the famous askari warrior are fighting over whether he should go to jail. What a sad state of affairs.

      rbphiri - 2012-05-19 15:44

You know what even saddens me about this story is that there are a lot of people putting thumbs down for positive comments. It just goes to show that there are far more worse individuals than politicians.

      Bobo - 2012-05-20 13:34

I don`t understand the thumbs down on such positive comments - I can only suspect the God haters...but none of them accuses Satan for it ? RIP little one...

  • Siann - 2012-05-18 16:03

    R.I.P little one.

      Shirley - 2012-05-18 18:09

Who the hell puts a thumbs down to R.I.P.??????? Sick!

      Bobo - 2012-05-20 13:40

The thumbs down is self centered individuals, usually God haters, instead of Satan haters. We live in dark days..

  • markwmilligan - 2012-05-18 16:04

This is awful. What a tragedy.

  • Christopher - 2012-05-18 16:05

  • Jean - 2012-05-18 16:08

I find it a bit sad that the dad didn't get is daughter as well but then again I haven't been in such a situation so won't know how I would react but really, stories like this is fully to blame on our anc gov! They won't do anything about the crime so accidents like this happen and at the same time our anc releases what they see as petty criminals. Just shows what petty crime can lead to! Thank you anc, another screw up you can be proud of!!!

  • Msika - 2012-05-18 16:10

So sad, RIP Young one!! The dad must have been very scared.

  • Shirley - 2012-05-18 16:11

OMG! This is SO sad! If we lived in a country where we felt safe and not have the need to carry weapons this would never of happend!!This family will never be the same again. Its time that the leaders of this country got their priorities right and started taking care of the citizens and not themselves! My heartfelt condolences to both parents!

  • Nicholas - 2012-05-18 16:16

Never pull the trigger until you have the target in sight and positively identified. Tragic.

      Nosiphom - 2012-05-18 16:19

May well be true Nicholas, but we are stressed by this rubbish! Someone who breaks into your house knowing you are there is prepared to kill you!

      mzuvukile.mbanjana - 2012-05-18 16:21

More especially when there are other people around. Well said Brother.

      Nicholas - 2012-05-18 17:06

@Nosiphom, you are right, but having a firearm is a big responsibility, once a life is taken you can never have it back no matter what the crime situation is or how we feel about it.

      maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-18 17:07

Exactly. Imagine the anguish of this man. I hope he gets over it.

      Nicholas - 2012-05-18 21:49

erm, I'm talking about not getting innocent lives back, not the lives of criminals!

      Juan - 2012-05-19 10:01

Good point and that brings me to another point, people should receive proper training in firearm handling, and this should include a tactical aspect as well. Probably tactical urban warfare in this country. When to fire that shot and when not to.....

      ratalem - 2012-05-20 11:51

in a case of robbery you don't think twice.

      Nicholas - 2012-05-20 20:21

  • lskosana3 - 2012-05-18 16:19

RIP sweet little angel

  • Rob - 2012-05-18 16:20

While zuma and henchmen worry about his genitals on display the country burns. I am so sorry for the family, the thugs must rot.

  • jackmoz - 2012-05-18 16:24

Shockingly sad. Guns......will the controversy ever stop?????

  • louis.langenhoven - 2012-05-18 16:25

the bastard robbers should also partly carry responsibility for this happening- the whole unfortunate incident is a direct result of their actions and the law should deem it as such if the victim of crime is the one getting the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately in SA and many parts of the world the criminal gets the benefit of the doubt- as ridiculous as it might sound they might actually sue the guy for putting their lives in danger

  • Vanessa - 2012-05-18 16:25

This is really terribly sad. Reminds me of that Visagie guy in Nelspruit who also shot and killed his daughter mistaking her for robbers. Punishment for them is the loss and guilt they have to deal with. And that is punishment enough if you ask me. Having said that I've always maintained that if you want to own a gun, you should be able to assess situations better than the Men in Black. People make mistakes when they are nervous, and a gun is, as we all know, a dangerous weapon. Very very sad for their loss.

  • mzuvukile.mbanjana - 2012-05-18 16:26

    Whatever happened to warning shots??

      Tony - 2012-05-18 16:32

Since when do the criminals fire warning shots - when you are confronted by criminals with no conscience or sense of consequence you have no time to ponder - too much adrenalin!

      jacque.raymer - 2012-05-18 16:35

      robbers dont give warning shots....

      snethembah - 2012-05-18 17:24

What warning shots @Njabulo? Have u ever been in such a situation before? Do you know how terrified the man was that he probably figured his daughter was sound asleep and that he wanted to protect his family? Some individuals chose to be insensitive as though its the poor man's fault.

      snethembah - 2012-05-18 17:25

      weareu - 2012-05-19 12:40

Yeah robbers don't give warning shots but wiggling a door is def a situation that deserves a warning shot so I agree with Njabulo. This is not the dads fault however, we live in fear in this country, not geared for this urban warfare. Also so called "leaders" are useless anyway, all over the world. Not sure why we expect them to do anything, we need to remove them from our society. Not like they have any ability that each of us don't have. Time to do something yourself. And I don't mean help people, educate people etc. Poverty and education is not proven to be statistically or scientifically related to crime. This is a terrible meme, apparent morally justifiable propaganda, but it's old world thinking and must be eradicated if we are going to get anywhere and find a valid solution. We justify (hide in reasoning) crime by blaming it on poverty/lack of education, but it could be related to so many things, culture, ideas, religion, you get as many rich Criminals as you get poor Samaritans so the theory is screwy. The question is, how do you culturally cut of criminals from their offspring and rest of their family. How do you prevent the infections disease of crime and the idea of crime to spread in a community of friends. A psychopath-born person will 90% of the time do crime as he is genetically predispositioned to it, why do we not treat these cases differently when passing sentence. Because our overliberal society has become unreasonable and ineffective solving this issue.

      Sharon - 2012-05-19 12:54

criminals dont ring your doorbell and ask if they can rob you

      Jason - 2012-05-22 13:28

I have to agree on this one. Thats why we fire warning shots, if the robbers ran away after the daughter was shot, they would have run after a warning shot.

  • Goggiedol - 2012-05-18 16:27

@Pythagorus- this is truly an accident the man probably wasnt thinking straight the whole reason for him getting his gun was to protect his family and when you in a situation like that, accidents are bound to happen...he probably thought his daughter was sound asleep and wasnt expecting her to be at their bedroom door....this is really sad...the worst thing for a parent is to lose a child especially in a situation ike this.....Condolances to the family...

What a tragedy, one can only think what the parents and father in particular must be going through, yes we may ask what on earth was he thinking? But unless we have been confronted by such an terrible panicked situation in trying his best to protect his wife and children against five criminals,we shouldn't judge.

  • tracy.moller - 2012-05-18 18:01

This is what happens when people don't learn proper firearm safety. ie: warning shot first. So sad :(

      Jolien - 2012-05-18 20:10

You do not know him, and you have no right to make assumptions like this. You were not there, you do not know what happened.

      trishawebbheywood - 2012-05-19 14:29

When you go for your firearm training you are taught not to shoot a warning shot. It will go wide and hurt someone else - and when confronted with someone who is about to harm you shoot him. But only if you are sure your aim is true. Warning shots do more harm than good, you invite retaliation, give your attacker a chance to take your firearm off you or hurt someone else.

      Maria Janse Van Rensburg - 2014-03-26 20:38

Have you ever gone on a walking Safari? It is reiterated at length what to do and not to do when an animal should attack. One should for instance NEVER run when you come across a lion. Yet....wil YOU be able to stand still when push comes to shove? I doubt it. It's called instinct. You can be 100% trained in gun safety and rules but when a person gets a fright, instinct takes over. Like swirving away vigorously at an unexpected hazard in the road at high speed. It's not the RIGHT reaction but it is a natural one.
