Pietermaritzburg - A 39-year-old man from Scottsville appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, charged with raping his 13-year-old daughter.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the child, told magistrate Ashin Singh that he intended to plead guilty.

He asked for a legal aid lawyer and the case was postponed until 12 March to enable him to consult his attorney.

He was remanded in custody.

The man was arrested earlier this week after his wife arrived home unexpectedly to find him having sex with their daughter in the bathroom.

He is charged with committing or attempting to commit a sexual offence with the child on 4 March, and with raping her between December last year and March this year.

Another KZN dad still on the run

Meanwhile, police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said late on Thursday that officers had not yet arrested a Pietermaritzburg father who was also allegedly caught red-handed by his wife while engaging in oral sex with their 7-year-old son a week ago.

Jeevan said that investigators were aware of the man’s whereabouts and he would be arrested as soon as a statement was taken from the child.

“Arrangements were made for the statement to be taken by a specialist, but the appointment fell through.

“It will be done as soon as possible and then police will act,” she added.

Jeevan said that it was necessary for the police to obtain the child’s statement before taking the matter to court, because there was a risk that the prosecutor would not accept the case otherwise.
