Durban - A Durban father was arrested after an alleged racial fight between members of the public and law enforcement officers on a beach at the weekend.

The fight, on Sunkist beach, appears to have started when the father of a 9-year-old girl shouted at and allegedly punched an officer, The Mercury reported.

The father - of Indian origin - is thought to have punched the officer – who is black - after the officer knocked over the child, says a witness.

This resulted in other Indians running onto the beach and starting a fight with black people in a crowd who had gathered around the officer.

A number of racial incidents have made headlines in recent months.

Last month, private school Curro Foundation School in Pretoria was accused of segregating white and black pupils. A probe was ordered after 30 parents signed a petition condemning the alleged segregation, reported Eyewitness News.

Last year, a number of incidents in the southern suburbs in Cape Town made the news. In one, a white man in Kenilworth was accused of beating up a black woman who was walking to work, reported the Cape Argus.

The man, Tim Osrin, claims he thought the woman, Cynthia Joni, was a prostitute.

In another incident, several white students allegedly attacked a coloured woman, Delia Adonis, after they had emerged from a club in Claremont, stated the Cape Times.
