Port Elizabeth - An elderly man allegedly shot and wounded his son at his house in Seaview late on Monday evening after a scuffle broke out when the son returned home after a night out.

Port Elizabeth police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwyn Labans, said the son, in his mid 30s, had arrived home shortly before 23:00 after spending time at a nightclub in the area.

"It is alleged that the man had been drinking and began physically fighting with his father when he arrived home," he said.

Labans said the 65-year-old father, who had been in bed on a ventilator when his son allegedly attacked him, grabbed his firearm.

A shot was fired, hitting the son in the lower body.

Labans said police were dispatched to the home to respond to the shooting and the elderly man was taken into custody. The son was taken to hospital for treatment.

The police spokesperson said the father had appeared in court briefly and has been released, although his firearm was confiscated.
