Dad sees daughter crushed by car

2012-05-03 11:47

Johannesburg - A Secunda man has told how he saw his only daughter being hit and killed by a car while he was out cycling with her.

Dr Johannes Welman started crying when he recalled how much his daughter, Christelle Swanepoel, 26, had loved nature.

He told Beeld: “She was fantastic. She lived life to the full. She had only been married for seven months.”

Swanepoel, 26, was killed in what has been described as an illegal drag race. Her husband Richard Swanepoel, 26, was injured in the accident.

Welman said he had been cycling with his daughter and her husband and had looked at the road to see if it was safe to cross.

He saw the yellow Uno and the silver BMW but they were far away.

Suddenly there was a loud crash. The driver of the Uno lost control of the car and hit Welman’s daughter, crushing her and rolling over her.

The drivers of both cars have been arrested.

  • christo.stone - 2012-05-03 11:53

Both drivers should be charged with murder.

      Mark - 2012-05-04 08:10

They can enjoy the cell next to Jub-Jub and his buddy. All of these morons should get lengthy jail terms, and be stripped of their driving licenses/banned from owning a motor vehicle for the rest of their lives.

  • camp.j - 2012-05-03 11:58

If this was my daughter, i would be charged with murder! This is happening way to often

      Elize - 2012-05-03 16:33

I agree with you, would have killed them both with my bare hands!!

      Joan - 2012-05-03 16:57

I too have only one daughter. We also have two sons, whom we love with all our hearts but we waited 16 years of marriage before our daughter came. She is the darling of all our hearts. I can only imagine how much her family are grieving.may God Bless them and try to give them comfort. YES Camp.J, I too would be charged with murder.

      Sinjoku - 2012-05-04 09:37

What a bunch of sad sad little dumb F@cks, may all you idiots putting thumbs down to people sending condolences burn, and be eaten by misery / pain /suffering and so on. I really hope you all die of some slow painful disease.

  • michellec.strydom.5 - 2012-05-03 12:02

Heartbreaking. This is Jub Jub all over again. Prepare to see this case spend years in and out of courts only for them to throw it out in the end.

      Martin - 2012-05-04 11:03

i dont think they share the wealth that jub jub had at his disposal, they will be nailed

  • meredith.r.pollock - 2012-05-03 12:02

That is so sad, such a young life gone in the blink of an eye due to the careless, selfish, reckless actions of others, I hope both drivers are charged with murder.. My condolences to the family..

  • roz.mills3 - 2012-05-03 12:06

Such a tragic story... My heart goes out to Dr Welman and Richard Swanepoel and all Christelle's family. A tragic loss of life through thoughtless, illegal behaviour.

      Jana - 2012-05-03 12:29

So... I wonder what kind of sick person is giving a thumbs down to this... and other similar comments. Sad!!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-05-03 12:32

@Jana, you really give a toss about the dumb thumbs?

      Nyiks11 - 2012-05-03 12:33

the people who gives thumbs down to this are the Bin Laden type , that type that loves death so much

  • Abdul - 2012-05-03 12:07

This pain and heartache of losing a loved one is becoming too common.ALL caused by recklessness and drivers who dont care a hoot about others....!!!take a look at wwwfatalmovesdotcom

  • David - 2012-05-03 12:08

Idiots. They deserve to spend the rest of their lives in jail.

      Shellerjc - 2012-05-03 14:25

Spending time in jail is not an option - You & I & everyone else on here will be paying for his 3 meals per day. I dont think that is justice - Do you? Bring back the Death Penalty

  • Nosiphom - 2012-05-03 12:08

They should be hung by the balls !!

      Joan - 2012-05-03 16:58

      Oh what a lovely thought.

  • Marion - 2012-05-03 12:09

This is tragic and totally avoidable. Sometimes it is really difficult to judge the speed of vehicles. RIP. Sincere sympathy to all. We want to buy our son a mountain bike for his 16th birthday but when I read stories like this I wonder whether it is wise.

      siyadyosiba - 2012-05-03 12:24

I was thinking of buying myself and my girlfriend bikes for training. These reports are slowly diminishing that thought.

      Nyiks11 - 2012-05-03 12:28

mountain bikes are very sought after these days on "the black market" and the hijackers know their brands. get him a vespa instead, that way he will steer clear out of harm's way

      Sharon - 2012-05-03 14:39

@ Marion - Get him a playstation, keep him off the streets period. Bicycles, motorcycles, even walking is no longer safe. Sure there are laws, but they only work when they are enforced. My condolences to the family. How sad that something recreational could so quickly turn into tragedy!

      Leon - 2012-05-04 10:57

@sharon: you normally make sense but this comment is very unlike you. lets stop breathing, cause thats not safe either. second hand smoke, air pollution, hell, you could choke on your own spit if you inhale to quickly. man life is just too much of a risk to live.

  • Nyiks11 - 2012-05-03 12:12

I am big fan of drag racing in controlled and designated environments . Racing on public roads conmpletely disregards other road users be they on foot , bikes or cars and such offenders should be handed hefty sentences including life in prison where lives are lost. It is extremely painful for any parent to bury their own child

  • shireen.abbas - 2012-05-03 12:18

The lost of a child is the worst thing a parent can face .deepest sympathies to the family , husband and fiends . This is a tragic accident that could of being avoided by this ignorant drivers !

  • Gcwabe.KaMavovo - 2012-05-03 12:18

I'm not holding my breath about justice being served here. Jub-Jub's case is 2 years old now and no justice has been served there yet.

  • braamc - 2012-05-03 12:21

Always the innocent that dies, children that get raped and scarred for life, what a shameful society.

  • Mark Milligan - 2012-05-03 12:24

This is awful. I hope quick justice is served

  • Ferdie Van Der Merwe - 2012-05-03 12:28

Very very sad. Bring back the death penalty!!!

  • Michaele - 2012-05-03 12:28

This is becomming common practice on our roads. If the kids want to DRAG race, the metro police should assist in alleviating their adrenaline rushes by providing places where these races can take place under proper supervision, police and medical assistance. Race illegally on the streets, kill someone, and you deserve to carry a life sentence, without parole for your lack of adherance of the law.

  • monique.fourie1 - 2012-05-03 12:29

people might think it was an "accident" but when they start to ref the engines they should think about the people next to the road, i say lock them up for life ! This shos you , your not even safe outside of your house anymore !

  • Nockx - 2012-05-03 12:35

    Umhhmm... Hang them!

  • Thololo - 2012-05-03 12:47

May her soul rest in peace.

  • chrismccrate - 2012-05-03 12:51

Hannes, ek het nie woorde nie. Ons dink aan jou..... Sterkte!

  • sean.leipoldt - 2012-05-03 13:02

everyone wants to hang these guys without even knowing what occurred... who says the BMW was even racing? you know how often i get guys 'racing' me just because i drive a modified BMW... fact that the BMW driver was arrested shows he stopped at the accident probably to try help... a guilty person would most lightly leave to avoid trouble... not saying he was not at fault but you cant crucify someone without knowing any facts...

      Ferdie Van Der Merwe - 2012-05-03 13:16

At what speed must you travel to cause such a horrific accident? When you see pedestrians, horse riders or cyclist on the road you reduce speed. If the two cars were drag racing, it means traveling at high speed. It's all about common sense I'm afraid

      sean.leipoldt - 2012-05-03 13:26

so now because the BMW was there you just assume it was racing? quite clearly the Uno was at excessive speed because its really hard to roll a car at 60kph... im just saying alot of these 'street racing' incidents are not actually racing and just some guy being an ass... I completely agree racing on the street is stupid, but not everyone with a modified car is a street racing gangster like the media would like us to believe...

      sean.leipoldt - 2012-05-03 13:41

well looking the comments made here it really does seem that people want to blindly kill or ruin the lives of any one they suspect of street racing all i want to say it that its not right to just judge people without knowing the facts...

      Ferdie Van Der Merwe - 2012-05-03 13:53

But the fact is that a young woman died. By the description it's been brutal. If the car was doing 60km/h then firstly, he would have been able to reduce enough speed so he doesn't lose control of his vehicle. And secondly, if he hit her then, she had a better chance to survive. And that's the facts

      sean.leipoldt - 2012-05-03 14:03

dont know why you on at me about this i never said those to blame should not see Justus i just said we dont actually know what happened and we cant just blindly blame people completely agree the Uno driver was almost definitely at fault...

      Schmee - 2012-05-03 15:14

The problem is not the type of car, it is the drag racing. It is fast getting a bad name because people who are not taking part in the drag racing get killed. Drag racing should be done in controlled environments. I will not be surprised if these drivers get charged with murder.

      sean.leipoldt - 2012-05-03 17:39

not once did i say street racing was acceptable... but as far as im concerned this is a case of reckless driving on the Unos part till evidence is put forward than the bmw was racing... im not going to jump on the bandwagon and say burn them both till i know what actually happened...

      Nicolene - 2012-05-04 08:40

Have you ever been in Secunda. Everyone in secunda knows everything that happens. The BMW was NOT arrested at the scene he was arrested at his home later on. Please get your facts correct before trying to correct others facts tanx...

If someone is trying to "race" your modified BMW, you are going TOO FAST.

      sean.leipoldt - 2012-05-04 10:10

Nicolene thanks for the info this does not paint a pretty picture :(

      Schmee - 2012-05-04 11:11

Oh come on Omnivore, years ago when I owned an RSI I used to have idiots revving their engines next to me at traffic lights. I never took the bait but it is tempting for the young and stupid. Hopefully the young and stupid learn from other peoples mistakes. The drivers of this Uno and BMW are going to live with this on their conscience for the rest of their lives. I’m glad I’m not in their shoes.

  • wehan.victor - 2012-05-03 13:08

Very Sad. Time to start taking these illegal drag racer's cars and impounding them indefinitely!

  • Mphotent - 2012-05-03 13:12

I am sorry for such a sad coverage and experience to the Swanepoel and relatives. May she rest in peace. This encounter is harsh, may the family allow themselves for professional debriefing session...with time it will all pass.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-05-03 13:19

  • Charmaine - 2012-05-03 13:55

How awefull! In Cape Town Killarney race track tries to welcome street drags at the track to try and keep these wanna-be's off the street and make it safer, but you always get the idiots that actually think they can drive, condolences to the family must have been something terrible to witness

      Nyiks11 - 2012-05-03 14:50

unfortunately some of the okes who race at Killarney can still be found dicing on modderdam road ,Stellenbosch arterial road and M5 late at night putting themselves and the rest of us in danger

  • Wesley - 2012-05-03 14:16

There is no way im saying that the drivers of the cars are innocent...They deserve to be punished for their actions... i am also an avid cyclist and also partake in "legal" drag racing. Im just saying the government should provide a better place for people to do their racing after hours. Yes racing is wrong and illegal but believe me no matter how many people die......Illegal street racing will never end.

  • Wesley - 2012-05-03 14:19

Even if both drivers are charged with murder.... This still wont put an end to illegal street racing.

      Mike Purchase - 2012-05-03 16:18

Wesley then we must take the problem into our own hands, seems like its the only way in this country unfortunately.

  • Liko - 2012-05-03 14:23

      Hanri Liversage Campher - 2013-03-13 10:24

who are all of you to judge do you even live here to see what happened and who are you to say hang them when jub jub was in the same situation and i dont see anyone commenting to hang him yes it is very sad what happened my condolences go out to the family the uno was mainly responsible due to the fact he lost control and colided with them the bmw was ahead before the accident took place by the way @ bhekizizwe.kunene the incident took place tuesday not sunday get your story right and to all petrol heads who would driving a uno turbo want to race a m3 its like a hare vs a tortoise besides dont tell me all of you have never tried to dice or push your car faster than the speed limit regardless your age there was no one to cheer anyone on to call it a drag race there were no other parties involved so dont judge let the law decide there fate

      clivelang1 - 2012-05-04 12:02

Who the hell are you to judge? My son was killed and flew 30m threw the air and the moron that killed him swears he was driving at 40 odd k's an hour. Yeah right!!!

  • rosalind.may - 2012-05-03 15:30

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-05-03 16:24

Simon it seems like you are the only one favour of the trouble makers.A person has lost a life here boet.If you want to race go racing,i raced bikes,in a controlled invironment. These little pricks that race on public roads are too chicken dung to accept defeat on a proper race track, yes?

      Simon - 2012-05-04 08:15

no mike im not judging jus simply making a point street racing is illegal what happened was tradgic i dont say thumbs up to what happened ppl need to think before they act i would much rather prefer track racing or draging on the drag strip u got a crowd cheering u on no police to come arrest you etc but it all boils down to a life that was taken in the mist of it all

  • graeme.murray.9 - 2012-05-03 18:30

  • muruti.malungana - 2012-05-04 06:03

This is a sad story indeed. Illegal drag racing kills lot of ppl. May God comfort her parents

  • Nicholas Taylor - 2012-05-04 06:21

Simon: You don't need people to cheer to make it a drag race! Yes I might drive a but faster on the highway but not in a residential area! This blatant disregard of the law which resulted in a senseless loss of life is one of many illegal races in this street. This accident occurred on a street just outside my property and it's a street that is regularly used a a speed way. Not to mention the the robots just a couple of meters down the road where the frequency of speed induced accidents is scary! It's time the municipality installs a stationary camera on this section of road too and steps up there visible policing rather that sitting under the trees eating KFC and sleeping!

      Simon - 2012-05-04 10:03

you rite speed cameras wud reduce it for sure are you sure you drive 60 in a 60 zone? it doesnt matter what speed you travel at 30 40 50 if u knock sum1 its goin to do plenty damage regardless ive even seen a bicycle knock a pedestrian over quite abit of damage after that both parties must take care cars dont respect motorbikes aswell so you mus take extra note of urself and those around you coz the world is full of idiots especialy on the road

  • clivelang1 - 2012-05-04 08:40

My son was killed just over a year ago, by two morons drag racing. And yes Sean, horror of horrors guess what....both were driving BMW's. Its not the cars fault you're right but its drivers in powerful cars that they can't control thats to blame. Everyone is a born racing driver-MYTH. Racing takes skill and practice and should be conducted in a safe environment-FACT. There are no words to describe the anguish a parent goes through when this happens. Even 15 months later I still want to kill.....but would your child want that? To have their parent locked up because they were killed? I don't think so. Two tragedies from one senseless act. The only thing one can do is keep pushing the authorities to ensure that justice is served. My son's case is coming to trial now in June, and yes in my mind and my families mind seeing the moron that killed my son in jail will be justice. Believe me!!

      sean.leipoldt - 2012-05-04 10:03

sorry to hear about this... i hope you see justice... did not say street racing was not a problem just that from this report we dont actually know what happened and yet people want to hang both drivers? come on thats what they do in the locations and we are quick to condemn them as barbaric... I also hate that people love the idea than our road death toll is some how caused by street racing when its mostly caused by inconsiderate negligent driving... street racing is a problem but not nearly as big a problem as the media make it out to be... I am sorry for your loss and i wish you well on the case

  • julie.khan3 - 2012-05-04 09:18
