Durban - A father and his 5-year-old son are in hospital after they nearly drowned at Thompsons Bay on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Sunday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the father is in a serious but stable condition, while his 5-year-old son, who was placed on a ventilator, is critical.

Botha said the father dived into the water when he saw his son being swept out to sea.

"Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found both father and son on the beach. The father, although suffering from near-drowning symptoms, worked fervently doing CPR to save his child," said Botha.

"Paramedics found the child had started breathing spontaneously. The patients were stabilised at the scene and medics transported them to a hospital in Ballito."
