Dad who claimed to be hijacked on the run

2012-10-18 16:33

Johannesburg - A manhunt is underway for a Durban man believed to have faked his own hijacking, police said on Thursday.

Colonel Jay Naicker said Leon van Rensburg, 52, took to the road shortly after police alerted him about their intentions to question him.

"Police investigations have revealed contradicting evidence from the explanation given by the alleged hijacking victim and information gathered by the police during the investigation," said Naicker.

A case of perjury had been opened against him.

"Police were in contact with him yesterday [and] set up a meeting, but Mr Van Rensburg did not honour his assurance to meet with police," said Naicker.

His wife told police earlier on Thursday that he had fled, and his car was found abandoned in the city centre.

The IT specialist made headlines last week when news of his hijacking spread.

He sent a message to his 15-year-old daughter at 10:41 last Tuesday reading: "Help, hijacked".

The girl's cellphone was off at the time as she was in school and she received the message only hours later.

Van Rensburg's white Toyota Tazz was found abandoned the next day on a farm near Kokstad. He turned up in Howick on Thursday.

The Van Rensburg family informed authorities that he had communicated with them and said he was with a family friend.

It was unclear where he was between the time of his alleged kidnapping and when he surfaced in Howick.

what a waste of police time and his family"s emotions. lock him up.

      maureen.churchill.9 - 2012-10-19 17:26

Lets show a little compassion for the family of this man, they committed no crime.

  • Daniel - 2012-10-18 16:42

What would his motive have been for this?

      rodney.overes - 2012-10-18 17:53

Yes he is getting a Thrill Ride in the back of a police van

      lotus.river.5 - 2012-10-18 18:15

in one of the earlier articles it was mentioned, either in the comments or the article itself that he recently recived some money. I suspect he wanted to make a nice cocoon for himself alone and claim the money was stolen?either way,its sad to see a dad running from his responsibilities.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-10-19 16:47

"A thrill ride?" Well... that's one way of putting it.

  • steveroodt - 2012-10-18 16:53

hahahahahaha...just cant stop laughing........good one Oom Van Rensburg....if you broke you broke....bloody cheater IT specialist

  • sandy.langenstrass - 2012-10-18 17:09

I would prefer to consider this, as the man is having a mental breakdown....Let's not always be ready to point fingers....until you walk in someones don't know what he is or has gone through.

      sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-10-18 18:05

Nonsense. He's a big time cheater.

      nick.tarr.39 - 2012-10-18 18:14

You dont run from the police after a mental breakdown do you. And if its not a mental breakdown you dont sms your daughter with a fake hijacking and traumitise your family for days. Either way this guy is a d00s

      John - 2012-10-18 19:25

Now that is talking sense!! Thank you. If we could have ALL the information we MAY be able to judge!

      ganon.nhubunga - 2012-10-20 08:21

What if he could had pointed me out as a hijacker? May u're right, mental break means insane, yes the dude is mad!!

  • sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-10-18 17:10

He should just file divorce papers. No use running around.

  • johan.harlaar.9 - 2012-10-18 17:21

Ray, Chris You guys have preconceived mind sets. Hijackings are committed by whites and africans. But the way you guys react sounds quite racist. Sorry for you.

      gungets.tuft - 2012-10-18 22:08

You mean white Africans and black Africans, with a few other shades of African thrown in.

      sudika.harkhu - 2012-10-19 17:18

I read of one story of Indians youngsters hijacking a middle aged Indian woman in Phoenix. When she stopped at a stop street, they managed to hijack her and said something to the effect 'Get out of the car aunty, this is a hijacking'. She wasnt sure to laugh or cry.

      John - 2012-10-19 20:04

Crikey I must be unaware! I have not read or heard of hijackings done by white africans. They are more prone to white collar crime! Point me in the right direction please.

  • thasmeel.singh - 2012-10-18 17:41

i knew it. this whole hijacking drama was just too suspicious

  • Nhlanhla Zondi - 2012-10-18 17:47

Its better to come back home the next day and say you were arrested for drinking and driving

      siliziwem - 2012-10-19 06:58

      then u bribed the prosecutor

  • truthbetold221 - 2012-10-18 18:03

  • cheers.perez - 2012-10-18 18:25

Well done Ray! VERY funny! loved it! As for chris.debeer1 and theandystrokes, you both need to develop a sense of humour and not be so touchy! Ray has picked up on a stereotype and played it very well. Maybe Leon Schuster could do a little sketch for us all?

  • simon.selahla - 2012-10-18 18:26

That chap is so selfish! How can he dramatize and torture his family like that, more especially his 15 yrs old daughter who was at school.

  • anele.mveku - 2012-10-18 18:28

Wow I tot something was suspicious abt his hijacking story, bt then again yestaday I read t on a local newspaper his wife telling it and I beivd it. this man mst just tell the truth nw, oh well dat myt nt be a good idea since the police r nw involvd.

  • Pete7930 - 2012-10-18 18:36

If this is the truth, shame on you for putting your family through this.

  • Pete7930 - 2012-10-18 18:46

To all you racists airing your dirty laundry on this post, i hope you yourselves get the experience of being hijacked by your own race!

  • John - 2012-10-18 19:39

Did this man make any statement under OATH that the useless thugs want to charge him with perjury. I don't think so! Why don't the useless thugs tell US the mysterious INFORMATION they possess? Why keep US in the dark? Hold off on your judgment until you get ALL the FACTS on this incident!!!

      stavious.mamatepa - 2012-10-19 05:42

@john if he wasn't lying why is he on the run?

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-19 10:13

He did make a statement the first time around after the initial incident. This is why he is fleeing, they wanted to talk to him again and might have arrested him.

      John - 2012-10-19 19:32

DEON, I would simply love to get ALL the facts. As it stands the story is too weird to pass any kind of judgement. He does not HAVE to talk to the police until they arrest him. So they should commit themselves and not feed US a line of bull !! Then WE can judge.

      John - 2012-10-19 19:50

The stupid statements that WE have been fed lead me to assume this guy is on psychiatric medication. So WE need to know the facts before drawing any conclusions. Besides, do you believe that police never lie? I don't want to insult you, but they do, to suit themselves!

  • whatda.fuqbro - 2012-10-18 22:58

WTF... He should be given a one-way ticket to the looney bin.

  • ron.warwick.79 - 2012-10-19 05:52

I think he just wanted to see Kokstad and nobody else he ccould understand why!

  • siliziwem - 2012-10-19 06:51

    he is on drugs!

  • christopher.m.lowe - 2012-10-19 07:27

I said last week that this story looked sooo dodgy. I smelt a big fat rat! What an idiot. I hope when they find him they prosecute him for everything they can and make sure he refunds the fiscus for every cent of public funds that he wasted. This guy belongs in a jail cell.

  • philile.khanyile.5 - 2012-10-19 08:14

We mustn't be quick to judge him, lets wait for him tell his real side of the story. Something is on here, the is no family man who can just traumatized his daughter/family for no good reason

      goldwright - 2012-10-19 19:52

Who are we to judge, fair enough, but really, whatever his story is, he still wasted police time & traumatized his family. He should have thought a little more before he got himself "hijacked/abducted"....... he needs to face the music now.

  • dale.simmons.7921 - 2012-10-19 08:39

He is a very religious man and active church member, that is clear from his FB pages. Why did he not just turn to jesus for help? With all the prayers he got from well-wishers together with all of his own, surely they helped him? Or is he possessed by demons of satan?

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-19 10:18

It reminds me of a well know CT actress whose husband ran off with a "sister" of his church. It is probably another woman or debts that is getting him down?

      sandra.j.rennie - 2012-10-19 10:22

Orbiting Teapot, don't let the religious man and active church member fool you. They are the worst. Bible under the one arm and prostitute under the other arm. I have family like that, so I speak from experience. They always bring God and the church into everything, as if this an excuse for their wrongdoings!

      dale.simmons.7921 - 2012-10-19 10:57

A bit like Benny Hinn. Ran off with Rev Paula White leaving his wife devastated. And Jimmy Swaggert...not once but twice! Kent Hovind...and.... and... and And people buy into the smoke and mirrors of religion?

  • hlengiwe.dube.7503 - 2012-10-19 09:18

He should be arrested with wasting SAPS's time. There are many other people who need their help! nxa!

      John - 2012-10-19 19:24

The SAPS are a waste of time. They have nothing better to do! Stop in at any POLICY ENFORCING STATION! Hang around and LEARN!!

  • olivia.karnak - 2012-10-19 09:46

Why would he first sms his daughter, and not the wife first???

      goldwright - 2012-10-19 17:50

I thought the story had holes in from the beginning - and when I read this article, the first thing I thought was "I knew it", but come now, so what if a "52 year old" is driving a Toyota Tazz? How exactly does that qualify him for being a low life? Please enlighten me. There are many people who cannot afford cars, would love a Toyota Tazz. Yes he is probably a "low life", but not just because he drives a tazz.......

  • pretty.zwane.71 - 2012-10-19 09:48

He only wanted ppl's attention i guess, what the hell was he thinking?????????

  • riette.nothling - 2012-10-19 10:01

How demented can you be to send a message like that to your daughter, not caring about the fact that your family is crying and stressing about your well-being, finding your abandoned car so immediately it is thought you are dead! If it was my husband I'd take him to the police myself and leave him there to rot for the heartache he caused!

  • briana.scott - 2012-10-19 12:20

it couldn't have gone any other way - dodgy from the start. What an idiot. People like him should be made an example of, Hijacking and crime is a huge problem in this country and people are dying because of it and then this idiot comes along and uses it to his advantage, well, tries to. Same with the idiot who kidnapped himself and they later found him with his girlfriend. They spit in the face of true tragedy. Arrest him and charge him.

No matter how bad things are - or may seem to be - or what ever the person has done . It is always better to hurt the ones you love(family etc) with the truth than to comfort them with lies. They will eventually forgive you for it. But at least they will be able to move on with their lives and never have the thoughts plaguing them about what the hek happened. something they did or did not do. Dont play with peoples emotions.
