Daughter sees mom raped with stick

2012-11-07 08:50

Cape Town - A man from Grabouw in the Western Cape has been jailed for 30 years for a brutal assault that took place in front of the woman’s 17-year-old daughter.

Ian October, 44, admitted to raping and killing neighbour Eunice Steyn, 41, whom he invited over to his house for a night of socialising, reported the Cape Argus.

He later assaulted her, bashed her head against the wall, tied her up and raped her with a stick in front of the woman’s daughter and his own 14-year-old daughter and her friend.

After the attack, October cleaned up the blood, dressed Steyn and dragged her outside.

She died at about 11:00 the following day and October was arrested.

October told the court that he regretted his actions and that although he was under the influence, he was aware of his actions and felt remorse.

He pleaded guilty to three charges of rape as well as murder and assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

why 30 years? This is gruesome , something out of a horror movie and the best you can come up with is 30 years? ffs

      jaco.bruwer.73 - 2012-11-07 10:15

He Should have gotten the death penalty. O, I forgot this is South Africa and its inhumane to kill a killer. Free housing and Food for him for 30 years.

      ex.dutchman - 2012-11-07 10:30

Unfortunately the judge could not impose more than the maximum sentence

      zambezi.river - 2012-11-07 11:27

      WESTERN CAPE .........................again!

  • - 2012-11-07 08:59

who are these people?????? bring back the death penalty!

      malcolm.stevens.129 - 2012-11-07 09:15

I don't believe the death penalty is a deterrent (to crime). What I like about it, is that as a taxpayer we do not have to pay for these weasels to enjoy the "perks" of prison. I say "no" to 3 hot meals a day, a hot shower, books to read, TV to watch, loads of (consentual) sex, for murderers, rapists and so on. Either dispose of these people as cheaply as possible, or make their families cover the full cost of their internment as we see in many third world countries. If the familes do not bring food or pay "rent" the person simply rots. Lovely. Gets my vote.

      scouter.fourone - 2012-11-07 09:28

You are right, the death penalty wasn't intended to be a deterrent but rather a means of removing severe threats to sociey, from society once and for all. The greatest benefit of the death penalty is that the perpetrator never does it again......

      kala.bafazi - 2012-11-07 09:30

Malcolm - That's definitely an idea worth supporting. I like it.

      Doep100 - 2012-11-07 09:58

Why can't we use these "people" for medical research. They have given up their human rights the day they committed the crime and can no longer be classified as such.

      typersa.baddy - 2012-11-07 10:03

      Love the idea Malcolm!!

      ex.dutchman - 2012-11-07 10:33

In a case like this I want to agree with your sentiments, but I am very weary of bringing back the death penalty. How many of the judges are competent, not political appointments? I prefer the death penalty be shelved. This lad will certainly not have an easy time when doing his time.

      scouter.fourone - 2012-11-07 10:42

@ex-Dutchman - I'm inclined to agree with you on that aspect. I am not certain I would trust this mob or anywhere in Africa for that matter, to administer the ultimate penalty responsibly and cautiously.

      rob.gunning.1 - 2012-11-07 11:33

@malcolm - How can you impose that the families of the convicted need to take responsibility for upkeep? How dare you imply that the families are guilty of the crimes of their other family members. If your mother / father was found guilty of a crime, do you think you should have to foot the bill??? Sorry but you need to think buddy, use your little pea brain.

      abra.kadaver.1 - 2012-11-07 11:55

Rob, why should we have to cover the bill ? I agree with Malcolm, if the family aren't willing to pay for the food why must I ? Let the scum starve to death behind bars , I couldn't care less.

      rob.gunning.1 - 2012-11-07 12:31

@abra - I agree, I don't want to cover the bill either but holding the families responsible is just as bad as holding the entire country responsible. As responsible citizens that condone law making, we also need to be responsible to those we convict. Removing the emotion from the argument leaves you with a different view point when it comes to right and wrong. I maintain that holding the family financially responsible for a crime they did not commit is not feasible. What I would suggest is that the criminal’s assets are forfeited and used to pay for his own maintenance while in prison. Does that not seem like a more workable, realistic and reasonable option rather than blaming the families or holding them accountable for actions which are not within their direct control? If the convicted is a minor then by all means, make the family pay as it is due to their negligence that the child was not brought up in a manner to thwart this kind of behaviour.

      morton.christie - 2012-11-08 10:36

Malcolm, who cares if the death penalty is a deterrent or not? if we hang them all (and pref before they can breed) eventually there will be none left!!! the only problem is that in our situation the anc would use the death penalty to hang innocent opposition party members and not the anc supporting criminals. we need a change of government before we re-introduce the death sentence.

  • sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-11-07 09:00

No. No. No.. This piece of trash realy deserve to hanged. How can u do such a horrific thing.

  • linda.duits - 2012-11-07 09:03

  • koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-11-07 09:13

  • flysouth - 2012-11-07 09:26

    Death sentance one time

  • terrylee.heuer - 2012-11-07 09:48

Please Judge whatever you do do not give this man a lighter sentence just because he feels remorse and pleaded seems to me that's what criminals are doing plead guilty and get off lightly....he must be given the harshest sentence without parole (pity we don't have the death penalty so these guys can sweat until their day comes)!!!! Life without parole for the daughter sake too!!!!

  • estelle.m.matthews - 2012-11-07 09:49

bloody sorry excuse for a man BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY

  • mart.botha - 2012-11-07 10:24

I propose a vote of no confidence in our justice system be prepared, signed by all concerned SA Citizens, and presented to the Minister of Justice and the President himself. A heinous and demonically motivated attack and result like this one, deserves nothing less than the death penalty. This mutant has no business being alive. And if you are a Human Rights Activist who doesn't agree with me.....'up your kilt' is your fault these animals are not afraid of the consequences of their actions.

  • philile.xakuvana - 2012-11-07 10:31

This man is sick mentally period...! No human being can do such more especially infront of ppl. Wish he can rot in jail

  • Iqhawe_eliqotho - 2012-11-07 10:34

This is a whole new level of sick! Fully aware and of sane mental state, he continued with an audience of children? This is truly a heartless human.

  • ian.rhodes.5686 - 2012-11-07 10:47

He committed two First Schedule offences, either of which in pre 1994 carried the death penalty. I do not believe that this rubbish can ever be of any use to society, he should be exterminated and the money that would have been spent on keeping this rubbish in prison rather used for some better purpose.

  • motlalepula.moloi - 2012-11-07 11:49

This pig deserves a life sentence.

  • heidi.oosthuizen.98 - 2012-11-07 11:54

I swore and news24 took off my comment - what i was wanting to say.... is that i wonder if anybody knows what this type of trauma does to the minds of the girls who had to watch (and hear) this. This animal (no, i like animals) is being fed and getting preferencial treatment in our state hospitals and these girls will never see the world the same again, nor would they ever be able to experience a natural and healthy relationship. What a world we live in.....

  • pgmdesouza - 2012-11-07 13:18

  • Hemlock - 2012-11-22 10:45

What a sick, perverted bastard. He should be raped by a stick up his ass and thrown into prison where he can lay and die, just like his victim did! He does not deserve the privilege of life on this earth.

  • Shelley Jennings - 2013-10-30 10:08
