Cape Town - A body was spotted floating near the Mossel Bay harbour on Saturday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

The NSRI swimmers, the SA Police Service, ER24 paramedics as well as the Western Cape health EMS responded to the scene, said NSRI Mossel Bay station commander, Andre Fraser.

"On arrival on the scene an NSRI rescue swimmer assisted by a local dive company diver recovered the body of an adult female from the water and paramedics conducted Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) efforts but despite extensive CPR efforts the female was declared deceased on the scene," said Fraser.

"The body of the female has been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and police have opened an inquest docket."

The identity of the woman was not immediately know.  It was also not immediately clear how she had died.
