Johannesburg - Police confirmed on Tuesday that four people were killed at the Grootvlei mine in Springs, on the East Rand.

"[A] Total of four bodies found with gunshot wounds," read a tweet by the SA Police Service (SAPS). A previous tweet put the figure at three.

The police said the deaths were allegedly the result of a fight over illegal mining rights.

More details were not immediately available.

The Grootvlei mine is linked to the case against Aurora directors, including President Jacob Zuma's nephew Khulubuse Zuma.

On June 25, the High Court in Pretoria said fraud charges could be brought against all Aurora directors, except Zuma.

Judge Eberhard Bertelsmann found that all the directors were reckless in managing the Pamodzi Gold mines Aurora took over and were liable for all costs.

Zuma, however, was held liable only for costs after December 2009.

In 2009, Aurora was appointed by liquidators to manage the mines in Springs and Orkney.
