Cape Town - A decision on a new inspector general of intelligence is expected to be made soon, the Parliamentary joint standing committee said on Wednesday.

"The committee will be meeting shortly to consider the applications," committee chairperson Cornelia September said.

The closing date for the applications was last Friday.

Open to the public

She said the committee would have to determine whether and to what extent the proceedings would be open to the public, in accordance with the Intelligence Services Oversight Act and the committee's rules.

Faith Radebe, the current inspector general, was appointed in the position in 2012 after Parliament approved her nomination two years earlier in 2010.

Her predecessor was Zola Ngcakani.

Radebe was the South African High Commissioner to all Caribbean community countries before taking on the position.

She had also held positions in the National Intelligence Agency between 1998 and 1999.

Protecting best interests of the country

September said on Wednesday the committee would "have the highest regard for promoting the best interests of the country and protecting the rights of its citizens".

The fact that the appointment of previous inspector generals were open to the public and media would be taken into account, September said.

"Both the Act and the rules provide that meetings of the committee are not open to the public (including the media), unless with the permission of the Committee," she said.
