A BADLY decomposed body was found in a bushy area in the backyard of Fort Napier psychiatric hospital yesterday evening.

The K9 Search and Rescue Unit was called to the scene after an employee of a company contracted to cut grass spotted the body. Police estimated that the body might have been lying there for about two years as it was reduced to only a skeleton. It is believed that the body is of a male in his late 50s.

Police still had to determine whether the identity document that was found near the body belonged to the deceased.

There was also a pair of trousers found next to the body.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese said they will be investigating the matter. “We will be looking at all the possibilities, whether it was a murder or a natural death,” he said.

Ngobese said the remains will be sent to a laboratory for DNA testing.

“We would like to encourage families who have missing people that have been missing for about two years, to contact Prestbury police station,” said Ngobese.

“The challenging part was scratching in the bush for the smaller remains of the body,” said Ngobese.

No comment was received from the Department of Health by the time of going to press yesterday
