Decriminalisation of prostitution remains on agenda

2013-10-21 14:57

Cape Town - The possible decriminalisation of prostitution will remain on the agenda of the newly appointed SA Law Reform Commission (SALRC), President Jacob Zuma said on Monday.

The commission has been working on "Project 107", which deals with sex work, for over a decade, he said in written reply to a parliamentary question.

"Research on the various projects of the commission as was approved by the previous commission continues unabated," Zuma said.

"This research is done by a team of full time researchers who have been assigned to the commission."

Last year the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) supported decriminalising the sex trade for adult prostitutes, saying it would ensure a safer working environment, and prevent police officers from victimising them.

This year the Commission for Gender Equality gave its support to decriminalisation, saying it would offer better protection for prostitutes.

A report by SALRC researchers proposes four options for the new commission to consider: decriminalisation, regulation, partial criminalisation, and total criminalisation.

It should not be legal!!!! And I will discriminate against them, there is other ways to earn your money than to sell your body.... And before we know the aids numbers will be rising as they won't stop selling their body, they needs their income. So they won't tell you they are infected!!

      Anton Kamp - 2013-10-21 15:16

2 Sonja, ""So they won't tell you they are infected!!"" THAT is one of the reasons why prostitution should be decriminalized, so one can regulate this industry, and help protect the public, by forcing prostitutes to go for regular check ups, and be issued with a health-clearance card! Than , having paid sex, without such health card, would be a criminal offence!

If you have a job you are effectively selling your whole body to your Boss, and if you're a minger, he will only uses it to complete activities that he need not be present for. Don't hate the working-girls, they work their fingers to the BONE!! kekekekeke

Sometimes, just sometimes there are no other ways to earn money, and sometimes, when your kids are starving and its the only way, you do what need to do to feed them. I know I would if I had to. Not to feed a habit or pimp but to feed and clothe and keep a roof over my kids head - yes I would. If there was no other way - I would.

If they can decriminalise prostitution then they can damn well decriminalise dagga too! The illicit dagga trade is estimated to be worth anywhere between 1 - 1.5 trillion rand per year. 8% of the population smokes dagga regularly. I bet 8% of the population doesn't pay for sex with prostitutes. Uh um actually on second thoughts maybe that isn't the case.

  • Mike Swart - 2013-10-21 19:59

PROSTITUTION SHOULD BE DECRIMINALISED BECAUSE IF IT BECOME LEGAL IN SA IT WILL HAVE A BAD INFLUENCE ON THE COMING GENERATION.....WHY WOULD YOU CONSIDER PROSTITUTION AS PROFESSION?..WOULD YOU ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO TAKE PROSTITUTION AS PROFESSION,AND ALSO PROSTITUTION IS IMMORAL IT IS AGAINST THE SOCIETY NORMS,VALUES AND GOALS....LETS NOT CORRUPT OUR COUNTRY WITH SOMETHING THAT WILL REGRET IN FUTURE....WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM TO PROVIDE FOR HEALTH SERVICE TO THE PROSTITUTE...WHEREAS WE STILL HAVE A PROBLEM IN EDUCATION,PROPER HOUSING,JOB CREATION AND HEALTH OF THE SOUTH AFRICA.... DECRIMINALISING PROSTITUTION IT WILL BE A BIG MISTAKE SOUTH AFRICA IS HEADING TO...IT WOULD BE BETTER IF PARLIAMENT COME UP WITH A BETA PLAN FOR JOB CREATION FOR SUCH PEOPLE RATHER THAN PROMOTING LAZINESS..FIND SOMETHING BETA FOR SUCH PEOPLE TOO DO
