Delmas bucket toilets to be eradicated

Johannesburg - The bucket toilet system will be totally eradicated in the Victor Khanye local municipality in Delmas, Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said on Saturday.

"The Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs...Lechesa Tsenoli is starting a programme that will lead to the total eradication of the bucket toilets in this area," Molewa said in a speech prepared for delivery at an imbizo, a public participation programme, at the Mpumulanga municipality.

Molewa said the Delmas area had a history of water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea and typhoid but that now the groundwork for the bucket toilet eradication plan had already been laid with previous water supply projects.

These projects included multi-million rand upgrades to municipal potable water works and related infrastructure, drilling and equipping 17 boreholes and refurbishing a waste water treatment works.

She said a current project aiming to supply Delmas with 25 000 litres of water a day via a 37,2km pipeline helped towards the eradication plans.

"I believe this is a huge step towards ensuring security of supply of water such that the eradication of the bucket system will surely have sufficient support to ensure longevity."

Water Affairs spokesperson Sputnik Ratau said that the aim was for the bucket system to be eradicated by March 2014 in informal settlements in the Delmas municipal area.
