Dept aims to foil Christmas prison breaks

2012-11-14 22:19

Cape Town - An operation to prevent prison escapes this festive season will be launched soon, correctional services national commissioner Tom Moyane said on Wednesday.

He urged prison officials to educate themselves on the new escape methods used by detainees.

"Criminals and drug syndicates in the 21st century have become highly sophisticated and far advanced," Moyane said in a statement.

This put law enforcement agencies under extreme pressure to devise new ways to fight crime.

Moyane called on correctional officials to report colleagues who were collaborating with criminals intent on escaping.

"There is still that insignificant number of dubious officials who are hell-bent on destroying the image of the department by collaborating with criminals."

@ Annelise don't let your hate for the ANC and thus government rule your logic. In the festive season crime and criminal activity becomes of the rise and also the rate of attemted escapes by prisoners tend to be higher than all year round The commissioner is thus urging staff to be extra vigilant makes sense to me as I used to work in a bank and we also used to be warned and take extra precautionary measures around the 'silly' season as it was called.

      debduplessis - 2012-11-14 23:19

Unnecessary actions. Prisoners - especially high profile ANC members convicted of fraud and corruption, will in any case be set free on medical conditions.

  • andrew.mackie.90 - 2012-11-15 08:56

This action should be an ongoing not just at Xmas!!

  • siphobongohead - 2012-11-15 11:33
