Derby-Lewis to apply for medical parole

2012-08-06 09:07

Johannesburg - Convicted killer Clive Derby-Lewis will apply for medical parole because he is ill, his wife Gaye Derby-Lewis told Eyewitness News on Monday.

She planned to file the papers in the next few weeks and hoped the attempt would succeed as her husband was suffering from cancer and from gangrene in one leg.

This was the first time Derby-Lewis would apply for medical parole. He was denied normal parole last year.

An MP of the apartheid-era Conservative Party, Derby-Lewis was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his part in the murder of SA Communist Party general secretary Chris Hani in 1993.

He arranged a firearm for triggerman Janusz Walus, who is serving the same prison term.

Both were initially sentenced to death. This was commuted to life in prison after the abolition of the death penalty.

Derby-Lewis is 76-years-old.

If they can grant politicians medical paroles, let them grant Derby-Lewis. Lets see how fair the state can be, this will be very intresting

      johan.vanheerden.737 - 2012-08-06 09:41

npmcebo.k.kubheka.3 - it will be very interesting to see the outcome of this. For all of those that says he must sit because he is white- would you still feel this way if he is a Zulu (and we know the ANC is a Xhosa party) and it is your son/father/brother sitting? We must treat all the same way in South Africa - is that not what the goverment tells us?

      azande.futhi - 2012-08-06 10:51

well, we all know what will be the outcome. its obvious... - 2012-08-06 12:25

      zimbob... mc bride?? - 2012-08-06 13:18

He will remain in jail..... Why must we treat all the same when HE was careful about who he chose to kill.....??? Release him in 20 years I say ... Just to P off his supporters..

      jackie.stone.501 - 2012-08-06 14:07

That one will rot in jail, he must never be released. They can release everyone but not him. If they release him I will switch to DA

  • fikile.khoza - 2012-08-06 09:45

the man deserve the parole if heatly Shabir and Jackie can get it why cant he???

      charlie.elford.5 - 2012-08-06 15:52

Coz neither Shabir nor Jackie were convicted of murder. Or of nearly starting a civil war in this country...

  • vivian.harris.73 - 2012-08-06 09:50

I say give it to him. What happened to the other 2 healthy criminals? The press forget about them again?

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-08-06 12:48

They're probably waiting to catch Shabir and Selebe playing golf together after their miracuous recoveries......

  • themba.thwala.98 - 2012-08-06 09:54

I'm sure given the amount of time Clive Derby Lewis has spent in jail surrounded by blacks, whatever irrational hatred he had has now evaporated. Let him go so that he can enjoy his few rounds of golf with Selebi before they both check out. They are both too old and sick to even swat a fly

      boffin.bobreturns - 2012-08-06 10:37

@ temba. Hmmm. I sense a " softening of the heart " there themba. Miss me old buddy ?

  • lerato.kay.3 - 2012-08-06 09:55

I can’t believe people on this forum only weeks ago you went ballistic when Selebi was released now you are ok with unleashing a murderer to our streets, no ways 2018 is around the corner let him do his time at least now he got some company, the boeremag has joined him in their honeymoon suite. I still insist no medical parole for criminals!!!!

      Sonnyjakes - 2012-08-06 10:35

Selebi and Agliotti? Kebble? Gulty by association my dear!

      rontheogre - 2012-08-06 10:50

Then let the laws apply to all, irrespective of colour, creed, political affiliations or religion, that is all that is asked. Many inmates that had also applied for medical parole since the ANC/Zuma induced Shaikelitis saga have already died in jail. I think those family members now have doubts about their loyalties to the ruling party. Zuma must remember that those that have died in jail after being denied parole as well as those now murdered after some of the mass released prisoners went on the rampage again, are now also part of the ancestors and have a bone to pick with him. Glad I am not in his shoes!

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-08-06 12:52

I agree, Lerato. However if ANC buddies can be given (false) medical parole, then a man who really IS sick should be given genuine medical parole.

      merven.halo - 2012-08-06 13:56

@Lerato, until you get caught for tender fraud, then you'll be first to stand in line for medical parole.

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-08-06 09:57

I do not and did not approve of what he did but he has served many years in jail and he is very sick. I believe that he should be given the chance to go home and die. Afterall, he is not a threat anymore. Shabir Shaik and Jackie Selebi got get out of jail free cards even though they were not murderers but this guy has served his time and to be honest he is sick and nothing can be changed at this point of time. Let bygones be bygones. If things were different. McBride should also be rotting in jail.

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-08-06 12:55

Exactly, Winifred. It should NOT depend on who you know or your political affiliation. I honestly believe that the justice system in this country is somewhat skewed... (Or should that be 'screwed')

      amanda.morris.9210 - 2012-08-22 13:09

I agree with Winifred, our country's history is based on forgiveness. Our beloved Nelson Mandela was also involved in what they called those years terrorims (As it was seen) and caused death of many innocent people due to bombing. Can't we forgive and move on.

  • Malcolm Jaftha - 2012-08-06 10:02

if jz grant him medical parole then he will not be elected @ mangaung so i dont think he wil get out of prison before mangaung

      merven.halo - 2012-08-06 13:57

      Good point.

  • jack.kukard - 2012-08-06 10:08

Only jacob's cronies get medical parole , so that they can enjoy the outdoors.......

  • osmaseko - 2012-08-06 10:11

No no no this scumbag must rot in jail

      ishmael.molatelo - 2012-08-06 10:23

Mr derby should get a parole..he is dying he cant live for long..he ms die at his home

      rontheogre - 2012-08-06 11:00

Os, because he is white????? Come on, be a man and be honest with us, or do only the women in this country have the balls to stand by what they say, however controversial it might be?

      osmaseko - 2012-08-06 11:11

Not because he is white but because he wad involved in the killing of our beloved cdr

      rontheogre - 2012-08-06 12:40

Then why did Amy Biehl's murderer get released early despite the fact that they acted like animals, stoning her and then stabbing her to death while baying like dogs, even laughing in court when it was described how she pleaded and cried. This is how her murderers and the rest of the mob involved treated an Anti- Apartheid activist, a friend and ally to the oppressed people of South Africa. And still people reach out to help and befriend each other, despite the possibility of the hand being bitten. Try to explain that one, 'cause I can't.

      merven.halo - 2012-08-06 13:59

@osmaseko, your beloved cdr? What about all the ANC and PAC members that were tortured and killed in ANC death camps under Chris Hani?

      amanda.morris.9210 - 2012-08-22 13:15

What about the murderers convicted for farm murders, they get parole and killed innocent women and children. But I guess the women and children also deserved it. This was a man just like any other politician who fought for what he believed in, in his time. Nelson Mandela were also involved in bombings taking innocent lives. Let the past be the past. Let us pray for a better justice system

Why not put him with Selebi and Shaik in the same bed? Something smells bad!!!

  • JAbu.R15 - 2012-08-06 10:35

I think they must give the poor chap parole, they gave it to the shabirs and the selebis. and even after finding out that shabir wasnt really sick he was not taken back to prison. So our governemtn need not to be biased in their decisions. those close to anc get a medical parol and those who are anti anc dont. that is so wrong.

      melusi.myaluza - 2012-08-06 11:12

he's a killer,if he has to rot in jail so be it,cancer or no cancer, selebi and shaik didn't murder anybody so they deserve their freedom, not this lowlife killer!

      ditoare.gypsy - 2012-08-06 11:26

Read the charges pinned on them before you comment, Selebi/Shaik got more money they can give it back to government than they were charged for, government released them becouse he knows there is a chance of getting their money back, IS THERE A CHANCE OF BRINGING CHRIS HANI BACK? - 2012-08-06 14:11

melusi, ditoare... CDL supplied the weapon used to commit the murder... he was not the trigger man, therefore indirectly involved and an accomplice, jail time was correct, Selebi and Shaik... i have my doubts as to whether anyone has ever died due to their dealings (corruption, drug dealing etc) but that is another matter. Keeping a really ill man in prison for a political motive smacks of revenge and hatred, if so, so be it, just know that it will eventually consume you... there is a better way... and on a last thought, speaking of lowlife killers... mc bride...

      sifiso.msimango - 2012-08-06 17:09

hey wena u idiot, u cant compare apple with banana, this guy killed, he is a muderer, he must rot in jail. shaik/jack only massaged pretty papers

  • walter.lebza - 2012-08-06 10:52

Instead of applying for parole, he should rather apply for extention for life in prison. His fans must stop stressing he won't get out anyway.

  • Khetha Hlophe - 2012-08-06 10:57

No matter how sick you are you ll never get any parole if the family of the VICTIM disagree.

  • linda.trinkies - 2012-08-06 11:07

Lekker one more and we can arrange a fourball with Shaik and Selebi!!!

  • bretton.eveleigh - 2012-08-06 11:09

It appears that Shaik-Selebi syndrome is contagious, but strangely it can only be contracted in a prison. Even if no one carrying the disease has come into contact with the, now very ill, patient!

  • zimbobwe.mugabe - 2012-08-06 11:11

@johan yes if he was Zulu and killed someone he should rot and die in jail. There are always comments here that killers must rot and die in jaila and what is so different about this killer??? Johan Kotze, Sunady Rapist, Clive Lewis, Mr Mahlangu, Mr Moyo and all other killers must rot and die in jail!!! Johan if my son, brother or father kills someone he must take responsibility and serve his sentence or die in jail. Don't ever try to compare this to Shabir or Selebi. They didn't kill anyone.

      zimbobwe.mugabe - 2012-08-06 11:47

Clarissa not my fault you didn't get any last night and no need to get your knickers in a twist!!!

      watsongeorgejan - 2012-08-06 12:30

      @Clarissa-And your point being?

      amanda.morris.9210 - 2012-08-23 10:09

Yes, Zimbobwe, a murderer should be in jail for life, but once again this was political and all political interference was fatal. Nelson Mandela was also involved in bombing and the killing of innocent people. This man is not a serial rapist or killer, he was a person like any other politician who fought for a country at that time. I thought we were a nation of forgiveness. Clearly not. Farm murderers raping kids and women and brutally murdering them get parole. Are political crimes realy such a horrible crime if we actually forgave each other in 1994 for past crimes? The system doesn't make sense Let the real murderers rot in jail

  • ditoare.gypsy - 2012-08-06 11:31

  • ingwe - 2012-08-06 15:57

I believe that the issue is not the crime but the medical condition of the inmate. If he/she is in the final stages of a terminal disease they can apply and the only consideration should be the medical status!

  • jacyjays.letsoalo - 2012-08-06 16:47

If he does qualify for Medical Parole then let it be. The issue is not who did he kill cos there are a lot who were released on Medical Parole for Murder under agravating circumstance and are still alive and cancer is terminal normally u die as soon as the disease spreads. Chris Hani's Family is the most affected and I feel for them but I also feel cheated when I see a person who killed my uncle got Medical Parole for HIV stage 2 and now he is on ARV's and leading a normal life. That comrade Chris was a prominent leader doesn't mean he deserves to be excluded from our constitutional gain. \r\nHowever, before he dies if it may be sooner, he needs to tell abt his counterparts in the crime and bring Closure to Limpo Hani and South Africa at large\r\n\r\nSelebi is also technically a murderer, drugs contribute to a lot of murders in our society. Nyaope has managed to find its way to our youths, they now steal, kill and rape to get a fix. Two wrongs don't make a right but let justice prevail
