Did SMS cause Oscar and Reeva fight?

2013-02-18 10:07

Pretoria - One of the latest rumours to surface over the weekend following the fatal shooting of Reeva Steenkamp at her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius’s home, was that the couple were fighting over an SMS she had received.

It was reported that Steenkamp had received an SMS from Springbok rugby player Francois Hougaard, stated Die Burger.

Hougaard could not be reached for comment but he had earlier released a statement saying he was not in any way involved with the shooting.

Meanwhile, The Mirror newspaper reported on Saturday that Hougaard was a close friend of both Pistorius and Steenkamp.

He had also dated Steenkamp before she started going out with Pistorius and had continued to be in a “close friendship” with Hougaard.

Hougaard pulled out of a game for the Vodacom Bulls on Friday.

In a twist, Nelson Mandela’s personal assisstant Zelda la Grange tweeted after the shooting: “Have you heard ¬rumours about a rugby player alleged to be involved somehow? We all have.”

The tweet was retweeted by many journalists.

      HenriLeRiche - 2013-02-18 11:22

More like another re-run of the Shrien Dewani case. The guy was tried by social media and found guilty before a court case. So typically South African. If any of you were in a similar position with all your skeletons coming out due to gossip you will also be found guilty by people.

      clint.skinner - 2013-02-18 14:21

So an sms justifies what? A beating? A shooting? BULL, no man is a man if he is violent towards a woman!

  • John Eritas - 2013-02-18 10:15

Listen, enough with printing rumors as news now please. These rumors may be false and can destroy peoples lives. Rather stick to the facts.

      Jane - 2013-02-18 10:32

I agree. News 24 is adding an article every 5 seconds based on someone said this, and someone thinks this. Seriously, a good journalist prints facts not half stories and speculation. Wait until you have some confirmed facts and then release it. One article based on truth and fact is better than 50 articles based on ifs and maybes.

      gary.guy.507 - 2013-02-18 10:34

@John - only a fair comment if you promise not to read any more stories on this case until after the case has been prosecuted in court - because only then will facts be know.

      John Eritas - 2013-02-18 10:40

Gary - Very valid point. I have a problem here naming Hougaard before the fact is confirmed. They could have stuck with "a famous rugby player." Now the poor guy is being dragged into the mess on an international stage without any concrete proof. It would probably pan out to be true, but still, this is irresponsible.

      gary.guy.507 - 2013-02-18 10:48

John - point taken. They could (and probably should) have left out his name at this stage until there was more confirmation.

  • joemarshe.push - 2013-02-18 10:17

If it's a rumor then why are you posting an article about it,News24? Shouldn't you get your facts straight first?

      John Eritas - 2013-02-18 10:23

Agreed. Apparently they were also swinging with Amore and Joost. I heard that rumor. Even if it isn't true, it leaves a bad impression on the people being dragged into the rumor on a international stage.

      Jeremy - 2013-02-18 10:25

The article makes it quite clear that it IS a rumour. It was written obviously because of the massive level of interest in the Pistorius case - and you can be sure that journalists throughout the country will be following up every lead. All will eventually come out in court but, in the meantime, public interest is at a fever pitch.....

      John Eritas - 2013-02-18 10:33

Dear Jeremy I heard a rumor that you were personally involved in this incident becuase you had an affair with her. Now thousands of people now about your involvement. When it is picked up by the international press, tens of millions of people will know that you "allegedly" had something to do with her death. Do you think that is good fair to the person the rumor is based on?

      HenriLeRiche - 2013-02-18 11:29

Helloooooo! The days of newspapers printing facts are long gone China's. Time to catch a wake-up!

      Jeremy - 2013-02-18 11:45

Oh damn, John, you've rumbled me! But seriously, there are rumours and there are rumours. And you can be sure that there'll be substance to the "rumours" related in the article.

I think its pretty pathetic and unprofessional for someone with le Grange's status to tweet about a RUMOUR. Every single article posted contains the words "sources". The media thrives off these BS rumours travelling around. Nothing is clear or certain until his hearing.

There are so many stories spinning around about this terrible unfortunate story. I fail to understand why Oscars family have released a statement "this murder is disputed in the strongest possible terms"? IF you have an intruder in your home dont you shoot once to disable the individual then call the police and ambulance. Why would you shoot soooo many times? He shot Reeva four times, what about the shots that were fired that missed? How many times do you have to shoot? They say the police were called a few hours before to the home for a domestic dispute. So many things just dont add up? I feel for Reeva's family, you just dont expect your daughter to be shot so many times like this by the man she was supposedly madly in love with? I guess time will reveal the truth? RIP Reeva.

  • cdvanwyk - 2013-02-18 10:26

News flash, murderers don't generally admit to murder. This puppy is an arrogant psychopath, there's no way anyones getting the real story out of him.. He'll stick to his intruder/mistake story and he's lawyers and spin doctors will run with this and work up a frenzy... He'll use his money and influence to drag this out for as long as possible. The saddest part is that Reeva's family are gonna have to be subjected to all of this before they can get closure...

There are new additions to this story every half an hour. Its all speculation. Sadly, the ONLY people who REALLY KNOW what happened is Oscar and Reeva. Who knows if we'll ever know the real story. He was the ONLY other person there... so yes he did it. The real question is WHY???!!!

      sandra.j.rennie - 2013-02-18 12:42

atomasicchio - Zelda le Grange is/was Nelson Mandela's assistant ! So for her to post 'have you heard the rumours' is totally uncalled for ! What would she have done if we did this to her Boss at the time ?

  • michel.wrede1 - 2013-02-18 10:44

No matter what they were fighting about, he had no right to shoot her, NO EXCUSE for him. Hang him, he does not deserve to even live in prison on our tax payers money. MURDER IS MURDER!!!!!!!! How does anyone think Reeve Steenkamp's family must feel. give them the attention instead of wasting your time speculating about a murder!!!!

  • lwando.memani - 2013-02-18 10:46

Sick of these speculations, i just hope the trial can resume already so we can start hearing facts.

  • lynn.hattingh - 2013-02-18 10:55

Zelda le Grange you surprise me, a woman of your stature getting involved in this circus! But then again, and this being said without malice, what do you expect from people involved with the ANC. When yor voices should be heard there is a deafening silence!

  • augusto.lugoboni - 2013-02-18 10:57

This is turning into a right soap opera, and the trial hasn't even begun yet. We all know he did it, premeditated or not. Now to sift through and separate the facts from the rumours. The world will be watching to see how the SA judicial system handles this case. Don't know if that's a good thing.

  • Michael Hawthorne - 2013-02-18 11:00

I don't care what happened the end result is a person's life was taken. In SA, Woman have no justice. Nobody is perfect and nobody deserves to be taken from this world not even by a made-up mistake The personal matter in their relationship is their business whether Oscar became upset about her ex or not. Honestly people if this is how everyone sorted out their problems nobody would be in a relationship!

  • mikyel.rampersad - 2013-02-18 11:04

lets make an example for women abuse in our country... Oscar must spend a life time in prison, unfortunately we don't have the death penalty so he escaped that... You will ROT for your sins.

      brian.dureuck - 2013-02-18 11:12

its not just chicks who are abused ... open your eyes ... boer genocide etc ...

  • Richard - 2013-02-18 11:04

I think so much is coming forward but all of it is still unconfirmed or in any event not confirmed to the public so it is hard to tell what the truth is but I believe that there is far more going on than so so called mistaken identity and a burglar in the house story. I doubt is was premeditated and probably more a case of impulse driven by anger but we will not know till the court hears evidence.

  • CaL - 2013-02-18 11:05

I don't think he's got a leg to stand on. The judge, however, may feel sorry for him and let him walk!

  • lionel.engels.9 - 2013-02-18 11:11

Has anyone thought of looking at the cctv footage from the entrances to the estate. Surely by looking at this it can be determined if Riva Steenkamp was already in the estate or when she actually came in. If she was already in the estate, well then it couldn't have been a surprise or a burglar but, if she entered the estate to surprise Oscar in the early morning, then it was a surprise that went horribly wrong. Let's wait for the final verdict and stop speculating on what might not have been.

      emma.boesak - 2013-02-18 11:17

In other stories it was reported that she arrived at his house at 18:00 on Wednesday.

      obed.majoko - 2013-02-18 11:58

According to the CCTV footage she arrived @ 18h00. The police found her handbag and ipad in his bedroom. Surely he knew she was there. He killed Reeva and he thinks he can get away with murder. He must be locked for life. Imagine if he get away with this and start dating your daughter. I wont be happy to see my daughter around Oscar.

      melanie.fourie.18 - 2013-02-18 13:30
