Did Zapiro go too far?

2012-07-06 16:24

Johannesburg - The ANC and the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) have demanded an apology for Zapiro's latest cartoon relating to President Jacob Zuma published in the Mail & Guardian on Friday.

"As the ANC, we are taken aback by this so-called cartoon and comment by Zapiro," said the ANC.

"We find it unacceptable and shocking that after the harsh experiences that South Africa, the president, and his family experienced [a] few weeks ago, that Zapiro and the Mail & Guardian will find it appropriate to continue with the insults and hurt to the president, his family, and the broader ANC constituency."

The party was referring to a now defaced painting by Brett Murray The Spear which depicted Zuma with his genitals exposed.

Frontal attack

In response to the painting the ANC launched a court application to have it removed from the Goodman Gallery and arranged a protest march to register its anger.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said the party was inundated with calls about Friday's cartoon, featuring an erect penis and a limerick about Zuma.

Calls also came from journalists, leading the ANC to believe all South Africans shared its "disgust" and were "equally offended".

An apology to Zuma, his family, the ANC constituency, and to South Africa at large was required, Mthembu said.

Numsa said: "This is nothing else but a frontal attack on the personal integrity and social standing of the ANC president Jacob Zuma camouflaged as artistic expression."

'Deep personal hatred'

"There is nothing artistic about this latest cartoon by Zapiro, but it is littered with venomous and deep personal hatred of the incumbent President Jacob Zuma," said Castro Ngobese, Numsa spokesperson.

The cartoon bordered on character assassination, he continued.

"As Numsa we can come to no other conclusion but to accept that some white progressives of yesteryear have become racist and colonialist in their outlook since the advent of our new democratic dispensation.

"The likes of Zapiro and Brett Murray can no longer hide their hatred for black revolutionaries to drive our society towards a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, and a society free of super exploitation."

The ANC Women's League  earlier expressed similar views.

'Too far'

"Jonathan Shapiro has taken his attempts at satire too far," the league said in a statement.

In the cartoon, Zapiro drew an erect penis with a face and legs and a showerhead on its head looking at itself in a mirror.

Murray's signature is in a bottom corner of the "mirror" and the name of the gallery also appears in the cartoon.

Under the heading "'The Spear' to be raised at Social Cohesion Summit", he includes a limerick referring to Zuma, which the women's league felt was an insult to people who suffered under apartheid.

"The Zapiro cartoons rely on their shock value to make an impact, but calling the president of this great nation a 'dick' is unacceptable and the WL would like to know who the 'we' he is referring to in the cartoon actually is, as the majority of the population who voted for the president clearly did not think this of Zuma."

- Take a look at the cartoon on M&G's website.

No! showerhead went to far to bring this on himself

      JohnRambo1723 - 2012-07-06 17:10

What I'm even more surprised over is how the ANC can pull things out like how he supposedly offends people who suffered under apartheid, how it's an attack on black people. I quote: "that some white progressives of yesteryear have become racist and colonialist in their outlook since the advent of our new democratic dispensation." He's gunning Zuma - the fact that he is black has nothing to do with it, however it's quite shocking how they can fit the word 'apartheid' into just about each and every complaint they make...

      Sharon - 2012-07-06 17:11

you keep writing borderline cartoons and you are eventually going to overstep the boundries, zapiro is good thats why it took so long, appologise and move on to the next cartoon

      peter.jeffrey.581 - 2012-07-06 17:13

@Sharon - Journalists dont apologize for writing about the truth neither should Zapiro

      claudia.meads - 2012-07-06 17:27

Interesting how the biggest haters (ie the ANC who overtly hate whites) always seem to accuse others of being (supposedly) hateful... More so, interesting how the ANC seem to think they speak for ALL South Africans - I see very few people here supporting the 'DANCING DICK'. Provocative cartoons is part of any intelligent and advanced society - South Africa is evidently progressing backwards, faster each day, back towards the stone-age where it was found a few hundred years ago.

@gladlad, I first of all though that he did go a little too far. However as soon as Numsa played the race card yet AGAIN I have changed my mind. This has got nothing to do with race and everything to do with poor leadership... no matter how much Numsa wants to play the "good old Race Card".

      fussed.anderson - 2012-07-06 18:05

      Frank - 2012-07-06 19:14

If you think this is crude, you should look at the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal cartoons. The only way Zuma can convince the public he is not a perverted sex maniac, who uses the presidents office to get laid as often as possible, is to get himself neutered or castrated immediately. Clinton smiled beautifully through the whole scandal.

      jmlongwe - 2012-07-06 20:02

Difference with commenters here and MG is that they actually talk sense at MG, here i'd swear am talking with kids who seem to be unable to put a point across without throwing insults. Oh well off i go

Get over it! Go and put some weight behind important matters. The president isnt that important. I never heard them squeal about kids being raped and crime in general, but god forbid you draw a picture depicting the president as a dick, it grinds to a halt and soon the marches start again. Put your energy into things that are important. YOU are a servant of the people as is the president.

  • JoeFarmer - 2012-07-06 16:39

I am outraged at the anc's outrage about an acurate depiction of their rudderless leader. I am more outraged at their "worry" about the state of crime and education in this country. if a Kingdom is run by a King, what is a country run by?

Mr Mbeki was a leader with morals and values - level headed, I wish the ANC can elect someone Zapiro can't draw suggestive images of.... Does the ANC have someone like that or are we in trouble? Remains to be seen

  • msaka.lekhosi - 2012-07-06 16:53

  • mart.botha - 2012-07-06 16:57

This outrage shown by the ANC and it's affiliates is nothing more than a reminder to themselves that they are puppets on proverbial strings. Sadly, no one in the ANC actually knows who the real puppet master is and this is why they plod along, a fragmented, disorientated shadow of their former idealistic selves.....blatently available to the highest bidder.

While respecting Zapiro's artistic work, this cartoon today, has gone so far and beyond. We need to respect the President of the country. The freedom of expression that we have today, is the same that the ANC fought for and many of our people died for, tortured for, maimed for. It a right that, we need to respect and enjoy responsibly. Zapiro, you need to apologise to the President and the nation.

My point here SHAHIEDA.ERKAMP, is to be honest with the truth. No matter what you hold or we hold against or for the President, this cartoon today, is damaging greatly on the nation-building and to Zuma as a family person like you, hopefully. I am sure, you will never be a happy father or mother if such a picture, is yours. Be honest, you wont be happy. My call for Zapiro to apologise, remains the same as you may know by now, he erred so much, actually, he has gone too far.

Zapiro plays this quite well: he is in a safe place. JZ can't afford to make a case against him because then all his dirty laundry is going to be hung (excuse the pun). Although, having said that, I don't quite agree with the sentiment of the cartoon. I think there are more under-the-cover ways of saying what Zapiro is saying :-)
