Dlamini-Zuma: Go for gold, Caster

2012-08-09 09:00

Johannesburg - Caster Semenya should go for gold at the Olympic Games, Home Affairs Minister and African Union commission chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said on Thursday.

In a statement, Dlamini-Zuma said she was "very proud" of the 800m runner and would like to see her qualify for the final and win gold.

"Selected to carry the flag at the opening ceremonies, the South African sprinter is now fully-backed by... her nation and ready to go for the gold."

Semenya qualified for the 800m semi-final in London on Wednesday when she crossed the line in second place in just over two minutes (2:00.71).

The United States' Alysia Johnson Montano led from start to finish, clocking a time of 2:00.47.

After the event, Semenya said she was satisfied, but said little about her tactics in the fastest race of the six heats.

"The race seems to be okay. It was a little bit faster from the first lap. I just had to maintain the pace to finish in the top three," Semenya said.

All hail Queen of the Obvious.

      Desilusionada - 2012-08-09 09:32

Yeah, My 1st thought as well! "Caster Semenya should go for gold at the Olympic Games, Home Affairs Minister and African Union commission chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said on Thursday." Bad reporting or bad comment? Know anyone who competes for silver or bronze if they have a chance for gold, Ms Chairperson? DUH no.... She should stand there and watch all dese funny dressed people, who all run away wahen du guy shoots at dem, and den dey run in between dese white stripes and den de 1st 3 poeple get deze nice round shiny coins becuz dey were so fast?

Agreed! It begs the question, "What are the rest of our athletes doing there if they're not going for gold?" She's inclined to make pretty unintelligent statements; and now the AU has her as their chairperson!! Her ex husband is breathing a sigh of relief insofar as his re-election is concerned.... she's slightly more intelligent and was a threat.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-08-09 10:13

Steve, I also used to have some nasty thoughts for Caster, but I now support her 100%. She is no more masculine than 70% of the other female athletes.

      salee.sithwell - 2012-08-09 15:52

"Go for gold" can also be used figuratively and can simply mean "do your best" or "give it your all".

      salee.sithwell - 2012-08-09 15:53

Chum, you naughty thing! "Nasty thoughts for Caster"? How "nasty"? *raises eyebrows"" hmm?

  • nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-09 09:09

Do your Best Caster, please beat the American, any colour medal will do, but preferably Gold

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-09 10:16

well unlike you, Im not prejudiced, racist or hypocritical, so if that make Caster my poster athlete, then so be it, Its people like you & Dieter Muller that give whites a bad image on these forums.

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-09 11:32

Sorry mate, it aint white guilt, just common courtesy & respect for one of the top athletes in the word (irrespective of her skin color), but you are a nobody, so you spend your time insulting others, hope it makes you feel better.

      morgaenart.farto - 2012-08-09 16:39

Nige, you really are ahypocrite, calling all and sundry idiots yet claiming to have courtesy. You are the idiot, you race-obsessed repressed boy-kisser.

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-09 18:08

Sorry Fart, I only extend courtesy to those that aren't insulting idiots, there is nothing hypocritical about that then, is there pal !!

  • nick.athinodorou - 2012-08-09 09:10

The obvious support for Caster from all of us aside, did news 24 not report on the Minister's call of support for all our women athletes?...or am l just being cynical?

      goyougoodthing - 2012-08-09 09:48

I thought the same... or is she supporting only the black guy :-)

      sean.howlett.71 - 2012-08-09 10:32

@goyougoodthing - LOL ! The ANC leadership doesn`t like it when whities get medals , that is a fact !

  • sadiemy - 2012-08-09 09:18

Such a great opportunity to tell us when the race is being held - and they missed it. Anyone else know?

  • boffin.bobreturns - 2012-08-09 09:21

" Go for Gold. " Is that not the obvious goal of every Olympic athlete competing in a final ? Anyway.....Wish her well.

  • Michael - 2012-08-09 09:31

    She will win!

  • Ze Don - 2012-08-09 09:32

And here I thought the whole point of going to the Olympics was to come stone cold LAST!

      louis.langenhoven - 2012-08-09 09:40

well through the wisdom of our Dlamini Zuma you are at last ANC!

  • busani.mabunda - 2012-08-09 09:33

      Ditantane - 2012-08-09 09:51

busani what are you trying to gain, rather ask about other women who will be on the finals today. Stop dividing the nation.

      tumisang.kolobe - 2012-08-09 09:52

What about them? This is a woman leader talking to another woman leader who was selected to carry the south African flag and lead the rest of the common athletes. This is from a leader to leader, commoners should be encouraged by the ministers.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-08-09 09:58

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-08-09 10:00

Tumisan, leaders of what? Stop playing the fool.

      Michael - 2012-08-09 10:41

Each time white athletes are encouraged, white commentors respond negatively, why must she bother.

      thandazab - 2012-08-09 10:56

Please Busani stop dividing the nation. I think since its women's day n Semenya was the one SAn who would be participating in something it was only fitting. We were all behind Chad and Van de Burgh and also Oscar when it was their turn! Right now its Caster n we will support the next athlete or all the athletes that follow.

      shooshyu.tu - 2012-08-09 12:46

@thandazab as well as Sunette Viljoen & Bridgitte Hartley!

      busani.mabunda - 2012-08-09 12:59

ANC are trying to divide this nation. Nobody in this sewer of ANC even mention athletes at olypics, only now because "caster" is running... blatently obvious racism.

      thandazab - 2012-08-09 14:25

@Shooshyu oh dn damn them for not mentioning the others. N the media too. Its the first time I hear of them. Don't even know what they do. Wish all of them the best!

      shooshyu.tu - 2012-08-09 16:19

@thandazab Big up for you wishing the the best for the mysterious (to you) athletes (Sunette =Javelin & Briggite =kyak sprint) may I suggest that you get behind the entire Team SA not just selected members. Furthermore I am unable to decipher the 1st 2 sentences of your coded comment.

      Harold Chisimba - 2012-08-09 09:52

      @morgaenart,eeeish you wil be misjudged.

      dee.980 - 2012-08-09 12:26

Morgaenart-Fart-o : You life time of under achievement and being henpecked is embarrasingly on display. Shame for you fella - Mens Clinic could do wonders for your impotence. No cure for stupidity tho.

      morgaenart.farto - 2012-08-09 16:38

Dee oh Dee oh Dee....Caster obviously has something hubby hasn't given you in months, poor dear.

      dee.980 - 2012-08-09 20:57

Morgaenart-Fart-O : You mean a menstural cycle? Sorry - hubby doesn't have one of those. Do you? If so - you might like to have a discussion with Caster on the pros and cons of tampons vs hammocks.

  • patrick.saunders123 - 2012-08-09 09:43

Captain Obvious flapping her lips again. Does this woman ever have anything important to say?

      louis.langenhoven - 2012-08-09 09:53

you would never think so by just looking at her huh?

      nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-08-09 10:39

tumisang, you & the other 2 idiots on this forum should get together, you have a lot in common.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-08-09 09:56

Geez, if the minister had fixed up the mess at the Home Office, we could have given her a medal too. Some people should just keep quiet.

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-08-09 10:14

Is'nt this why she is there to compete for the GOLD. Lets hope she does.

  • john.loveland.9 - 2012-08-09 10:19

Seriously.... No news today? Just as well you told her to go for gold. All this time shes been wanting a bronze...

  • - 2012-08-09 10:27

Good luck Caster! Don't know why the rest of the World thinks we want different rules for Africa. Oh wait!! We DO want different rules. What was I thinking!

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-08-09 11:06

What I like about Nkosozana is how she oozes personality and intelligence.

  • knox.xisalahosi - 2012-08-09 11:46

  • Johan De Beer - 2012-08-09 11:47

She's a South African olympian and she deserves our support. Just like all the other olympic athletes. She has a real chance at gold, and I for one will be cheering for her all the way.

  • Johan De Beer - 2012-08-09 11:53

Just remember, the minister was just quoted by the media. She did not call for a press conference to make this statement and she did not necessarily imply that Semenya is more important than the other gold medal contenders. Keep it real, people.

  • charles.gregory.7906 - 2012-08-09 11:54

Forget all neg comments, they believe they are so clever, go caster 1 more gold sounds good to me

  • J.Stephen.Whiteley - 2012-08-09 12:01

Reminds me of when President John Vorster publicly congratulated Arnold Taylor on his boxing championship; I thought, what the hell has it to do with you, Vorster?

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-08-09 12:39

Never mind about her past, dont blame her, blame the minister who exploited her for his own gain. Obviously, she has been cleared to run in this race. So dont let us all be so cruel, there are many of us that have skeletons in the cupboards. Wish her luck and forgot about politics just for once.

  • Hermann - 2012-08-09 12:52

What about our other athletes Madam?

  • Perfume5 - 2012-08-09 14:17

Amazing they did not crawl out to wish the other athletes!!!!!!
