Cape Town - An elderly man has been found alive after spending five days and five nights lost in the Drakenstein Mountains with his two dogs.

Die Burger reported on Monday that Basil Moore, 80, a former Stellenbosch University economics professor, went missing after going for a hike with his two Ridgeback dogs last Tuesday.

A team of 32 volunteers from Wilderness Search and Rescue combed the area in search of him.

Team leader Donnie Dunn told Die Burger he called out the names of Moore's two dogs on Sunday. The dogs then responded by barking, leading rescuers to them.

The dogs had stayed close to him the entire time, and helped rescue him, Dunn said.

Moore was found tired and dehydrated, with scratches on his body. He had apparently survived on water and plants. He was admitted to hospital for observation.

Moore's wife told the newspaper she was very grateful he had been found alive, and believes he became disorientated while hiking. Their son arrived in Cape Town from Canada on Sunday.
