Dogs seized from N West backyard breeder

2012-10-11 17:59

Johannesburg - A total of 62 dogs were removed from an illegal dog breeder in Wolmaransstad, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in the North West said on Thursday.

German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Jack Russells and Boerboels were among some of the dogs found locked in small cages on the premises on Wednesday, Jaco Pieterse said.

"Four pigs and a tortoise were also seized in terms of the warrant and were taken to safety at an undisclosed SPCA."

Pieterse said the animals were kept in dirty and parasitic conditions. Some did not have access to clean drinking water.

He said the SPCA was dealing with the problem of "backyard" breeding which was fuelled by "animal-brokering".

Pieterse said this was when an individual placed an advert to sell an animal and insisted on delivering it to the buyer.

"This means that anyone buying an animal in this way has no access to the manner in which they were bred... people must ask to see the conditions in which animals are raised."

The SPCA said it would lay criminal charges against the owner of the animals in terms of the Animals Protection Act.

They say you can deduct alot about a person just by looking at how he treats animals. I suppose this guy is an absolute bast@rd. I hope those animals get lovely homes and wonderful owners.

One should perhaps say no more. But maybe a little stint at the hands of ... never mind. Let's say no more.

We have a dog which my son rescued from a pig like this one. Thw dog is so badly bred you can't believe it!Her tail is removed and she was so infested with parasites we thought she would die. But we pulled her through and she is the most loving and patient thing! I think she suffers , as result of an identity crisis. She lives with two very bossy cats1

      virginia.greenwoodwarner - 2012-10-12 13:51

As long as the publications such as Junk Mail, Gum Tree, OLX and the various newspaper classifieds continue to allow people to advertise pets on their sites and publications without vetting the advertiser and people remain ignorant of where the animals are coming from, back-yard breeding syndicates and puppy mills will continue to flourish. There are many a pet store who also allow this business to flourish as they too will allow puppies to be sold from their stores without vetting the person selling the animal. It is high time all the animal welfare organizations and the public stood together to pressurize all those concerned to change their policies to try and eradicate backyard and puppy mill breeding.

Thank you GRUBBY.PAWS, well said. No pet should ever be "Free to good home" or sold in pet shops, on-line or even from un-registered breeders. Pet python owners, medical and cosmetic research, backyard breeders, security companies, deep sea fishermen, crocodile farmers.............all horrific, cruel, unkind people who take full advantage of this tragic situation to obtain vulnerable 'free or cheap animals.' PLEASE EVERYBODY, SPREAD THE WORD, SIGN PETITIONS, TAKE ACTION, REPORT INDISCRIMINATE BREEDERS, STERILISE ALL PETS TO PREVENT PUPS AND KITS ENDING UP SUFFERING, HUNGRY, SICK, DISEASED, HOMELESS.........!!!

      ingi.raikes - 2012-10-12 08:30

DILLIGAF, your name says it all!!! What are YOU smoking??? The fact that 7 people already have given you the 'thumbs down' shows who is on the right track and it's not you!!! The pet trade needs to be FULLY controlled by registered breeders who vet prospective owners to stop indiscriminate buyers from access to vulnerable animals, do you not see that????? Are you an animal lover or what????????????? Do you care????????

  • crracker.crackerr - 2012-10-11 18:23

How you treat animals is a sure sign of whether you are a sociopath. Your total lack of empathy says a lot. I am now going to expand that to the old Hebrews and the others who tortured and sacrificed animals. They did the same with their fellow human beings. The current rubbish should be dealt with like all sociopaths should be dealt with. A long if not permanent removal out of society. Gemors!

  • ingi.raikes - 2012-10-11 18:27

Bloody bastards! In Pet Rescue we battle trying to get EVERYBODY to STERILISE their pets. FFS, shelters are bursting at the seams, hundreds and thousands of dogs and cats are being killed monthly because of selfish, cruel, nasty humans; the most inhumane of all animals; who are breeding indiscriminately, for financial gain! Shame on all breeders who exploit animals, you are sick, sick, sick!!! Every pet owner should have to register and licence each and every pet and it should be compulsary to sterilise and neuter them all by law as well. "DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE THE HOMELESS DIE!"

      crracker.crackerr - 2012-10-11 18:32

      So true!

      delish7564 - 2012-10-12 08:19

@QI. Well said, although have to say under Cape Town municipality you do have to register your animals and you're only permitted a certain number per erf size, mind you, can't see everybody abiding by this!! Not quite sure how that relates to people who breed dogs, in particular, as a business.

      ingi.raikes - 2012-10-12 09:05

Hi Delish7564, Yes I know about the Cape Town Municipality's rules. Good for them!!! Although, as you say it is very hard to completely enforce, it's a step in the right direction at least and I understand that the D.A. has introduced a system whereby it is more cost effective and not as cruel to set up free Sterilisation Centres to spay and neuter pets than to dispose of thousands of dead bodies that have been killed!!! VOTE FOR CHANGE COUNTRYWIDE, VOTE D.A., the compassionate party with its head screwed on the right way!!!

      eugeni.potgieter - 2012-10-12 12:56

I agree with you QI. . .'DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE THE HOMELESS DIE!"

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-10-11 19:08

Lock him up in a crate, and feed him dog food and no water, Just leave them there to die. Bastards don't deserve a place on this earth.

  • John - 2012-10-11 19:22

What is an ILLEGAL dog breeder? What laws regulate dog breeding? This guy may have been negligent in the CARE of his dogs! This may be ILLEGAL! Whose permission or licence or permit is required to breed your dogs? They are private property. You had better look after them properly or the SPCA will remove them and failing to find homes for them will KILL them!!

      stefanus.nel.50 - 2012-11-15 07:04

Cry me a river! You are an idiot!

  • John - 2012-10-11 19:55

I think that WE should have a good look at the facilities and procedures of the great SPCA!!

      stefanus.nel.50 - 2012-11-15 07:03

What about you John? What have you done for the animals lately? Thought so - no pi$$ off troll!

  • hannah.p.mostert - 2012-10-11 20:39

Well done SPCA for looking out for these animals and taking action against the perpetrators

  • crracker.crackerr - 2012-10-11 21:24

I can't resist. Is that the all knowing and compassionate god we hear of who is actually also the former and creator of the animals no matter what the deplorable conditions await them? Very much the same where it comes to the humans. Billions out of basic opportunities. What is going on?

      dan.ledwaba.5 - 2012-10-12 02:37

I also can't resist. No, its your god that's doing these things. My God is better than yours.

  • mariaan.vantonder.7 - 2012-10-12 07:25

People like this must be kept in small cages with no drinking water of food, left to the conditions of nature, hopefully then they will be more humane to the poor defenseless animals. wish i could adopt the german sheppard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • vanessa.govender.73 - 2012-10-12 09:38

Three kinds of people i abhor with intense passion in this world. Criminals, bigots and people who treat animals&kids badly. But i also believe in Karma!

Adolf Hitler said: you can judge any person by hoe treats plants and animals. What kind of savage can possibly inflict such cruelty on an animal. I say Place the individual in one of his own cages, feed him on bread and water until he dies either from unsanitary conditions or exposure
