Johannesburg - Dogs tried to rescue a toddler from drowning in a residential swimming pool in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, paramedics said.

"In their frantic attempt to save the child it appears that they severely mauled her one arm," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

Neighbours saw the 2-year-old girl lying on the edge of the pool after the dogs had pulled her out of the water.

Paramedics arrived to find she had died on the scene.

  • alaina.erasmus - 2012-10-12 18:44

And some people think a dog is just a dog. RIP to the little girl. Why didn't the pool have a net?

    Humans best friend!

Absolutely ISO, a dog would willingly and without heasitation give his life for his owner, even if the owner treats him badly. Such is the extent of their unfailing loyalty.

This is so sad, at least the dogs tried to help, but where were her parents and WHY was there no net or fence over or around the pool and WHY was she allowed out alone in the pool area. Sorry but the parents are to blame here. and should be arrested.

  • Erna - 2012-10-12 18:55

How heartwarming. We could learn a lot about kindness from 'dumb' animals... can't help to cconcur a tragedy could have been avoided under supervision.

The 2 year old girl was the domestic workers 2 year old niece. The pool in question apperas not to have been used or cleaned in months judging by the colour of the water and the fact the pool was only three quarters full. The homeowner should have known that the pool would be a danger with a small child running free and should have emptied or covered it. It is sad that a life has been snuffed out by shear carelessness on the part of the homeowner.

It is amazing to see so much ignorance about dogs.Regardless of what some dumb ignorant people would say, humans got so much to learn from dogs.Folks if you can spare some of precious time try to observe your dog if you have one. You would be amazed. The animal behaviour science is such an interesting topic.Remember dogs dont speak human language but their own.Observe people, observe..if you can.. A big hurray to the dog(s) which tried to rescue the little girl. Cheers.

Rest this child in peace and give the dogs a bone. Dogs are truly mans best friend. Condolences to family and loved ones. Although I cannot help asking "WHERE were the parents/supervisors" and why no net/fencing?
