Johannesburg – The ANC Women’s League and International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said on Thursday it was an insult to insinuate that its leaders were puppets of the so called 'premier league'.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Gallagher Convention Centre, she said their agenda was set by themselves and not by others, as much as they welcome the support.

"This thing about us being used by the 'premier league', we want to say to doomsayers that they must not insult us. We are adults and we are leaders in our own right.

"We fought for this freedom together with others and we have role models who have done a good job with us."

Secretary general Moego Matuba said: "We don’t know the structure called the 'premier league' in the structures of the ANC.

"We are from a properly constituted conference that elected us to be the leadership and members in that particular conference were delegates from the branches of the ANCWL. So let us not confuse issues."

The premier league allegedly includes Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza, North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo and Free State Premier Ace Magashule.

The three also chair the ANC in their respective provinces and - according to the rumours - the plan is to entrench themselves as leaders or kingmakers for 2017 when the ANC elects President Jacob Zuma's successor.
