East London - Eastern Cape health MEC Sicelo Gqobana has accused his predecessors of lying to the public, it was reported on Monday.

"My predecessors, one after another, had promised the people of Mqanduli to build them clinics," the Daily Dispatch quoted him as saying.

"Disappointingly, they abandoned the promises and never came back to say they were only joking. It is wrong," he reportedly said on Saturday at a National Healthcare Insurance event at Mandela Park.

He said residents of Mqanduli, a village 30km from Mthatha, were still waiting for clinics.

"As government representatives, let us refrain from making empty promises. Let us commit ourselves to the real deal and not lip-service...

"We politicians must not lie to our people," he said.
