Johannesburg - Two Douglasdale police officers were suspended on Wednesday after video footage purporting to show police brutality was widely circulated.

"They were served with their suspension notices this morning," said Douglasdale police spokesperson Warrant Officer Balan Muthan.

"The matter will be investigated by IPID," he said, referring to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate which probes allegations of misconduct against police officers.

The investigating officer in the case had already contacted "Anton" and "Shane", the two allegedly subjected to brutality and would keep them informed.

The video, titled Police brutality hits again! Secret video footage, Douglasdale SAPS, purports to show two men in an exchange with two men in blue, and a police vehicle in the background bearing the Douglasdale police marking.

Using the pseudonyms Anton and Shane, Shane said they were on their way home at about 03:30 on August 18 when two police officers suddenly stopped and confronted them.

He said a policeman threatened to kill him and he had managed to get his camera to film.

He alleged that one officer gave Anton a rectal search and also searched his genitals.

Their faces were shadowed in the video.

A case was opened at Douglasdale police.
