Johannesburg - A response to a domestic violence call took an unexpected turn for Douglasdale police when the suspect hanged himself using his shoe laces in the back of the police van.

The police had been called to the house on Tuesday night following a dispute between the man and his partner, police spokesperson Balan Muthan said.

"Police arrived at the said address and took the guy, who was a bit violent at the time, and put him at the back of the police van."

"They were busy inside the house, taking a statement from the complainant and afterwards went back to the van."

The police officers wanted to speak to the man before driving him to the police station.

"They opened [the back of the van] and found he had hung (sic) himself with his shoe laces," Muthan said.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) have investigated the matter and cleared the police of any wrongdoing.

"IPID ruled it was a suicide. The police had not acted negligently," Muthan said.
