Drag racing may have caused taxi crash

2012-11-19 10:35

Cape Town - Police are investigating the role of two drag racers in the deaths of four people on a highway, according to a report on Monday.

The Cape Argus reported that a minibus taxi was driving on the M5 on Sunday morning when it overturned and landed in a ditch.

A man and three women, aged between 50 and 72, were killed.

Provincial police spokesperson Andre Traut said a culpable homicide case was opened.

"We have reason to believe that it was caused by two motor vehicles which were driving at excessively high speeds, and were possibly dicing at the time. No one has been arrested as yet."

Witness Nurjehan Perin told the newspaper she and her boyfriend Charl Krieger saw a silver Mercedes-Benz and a black and silver Volvo on that stretch of road at the time.

The cars were apparently speeding and moving from lane to lane. She said the minibus taxi was not speeding.

Krieger, a fireman, called emergency services after the taxi flipped and other motorists also stopped to help.

My condolences to the families that lost their loved ones. Now to the authorities: Mr Carlisle, this happened on your turf. How are you and those involved in trying to prevent these things happening going to do something about it? Please no drama speeches such as at the railway crossing accident. Also some action before a year is past and then having to hear that you cannot do it all by yourself.

Peter, any suggestions how Robin Carlisle can prevent this? It's only possible if they can bring the two idiots to book and make an example of them, but without knowing who they are, there's not a lot he can do.

Pot holes. The more potholes there are on roads, the slower people will have to drive. I know it's weird, but it makes perfect sense.

My condolences to the bereaved. If it is a case of excessive speed/drag racing causing the accident, I do not condone such action. That said, how qualified is the eye witness to judge speed ? We daily face a barrage of driving incompetence, by the DRIVERS themselves failing to accurately gauge the speed of a vehicle, travelling in the same direction on a dual/multi carriageway, prior to changing lane into that of the approaching vehicle. It is even worse when contra flow vehicle speeds are estimated (a root cause of head-on collisions). Makes one wonder whether this was a drag racing incident or a case of the taxi driver stupidity, trying to apportion blame to the other unidentified vehicle drivers.
