Driver crams 45 children into 14-seater

2011-01-31 23:05

Johannesburg - A 31-year-old taxi driver was arrested for loading 45 school children into a 14-seater taxi on Monday outside Phokeng, said the North West department of public safety.

The driver was transporting the children from Boshoek Primary School to Phokeng when he was stopped by traffic officers from the North West Provincial Road Traffic Management Unit, department spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said in a statement.

Earlier on Monday, the same driver was issued with a ticket for driving a taxi without an operating licence.

Kgwele said traffic officers had to ask for the assistance of the Bafokeng Taxi Association to ensure the children were taken home after the taxi was impounded.

The phenomenon of overloading of scholars and illegal operations has resulted in untold misery of loss of lives in road accidents and conflicts among taxi operators," said acting public safety MEC Dr Magome Masike.

"The proactive operations across the province are intended to prevent incidents and accidents that can be caused by overloaded taxis," he said.

    W T F bloody jackass!!!

  • Macho Mike - 2011-01-31 23:35

He He, all the big talk about clamping down on taxis. The idiotic driver was ticketed earlier for driving a taxi without an operating licence. Why the heck was his taxi not impounded when he was stopped the first time? Probably gave the cop a tip and drove off. These mobile death traps will continue to thrive whilst there is a naafie approach by the police and the African National Circus.

      christine - 2011-02-01 07:10

well said macho mike ---the problem is not the idiot taxi driver per se but the law ENFORCEMENT---yep u are correct-- the circus are elected to fix this-- is it the cant or they wont????

      Wow! - 2011-02-01 07:33

I am with Christine on this one. We pay this government to implement adequate policing - they employ corrupt idiots. Result NO policing. Bloody fools!!

      Kyle_logan - 2011-02-01 07:50

the Authorities need to do something about the owners not just the drivers. Problem is the drivers loose money when they stopped and have to make up that money so they cram more kids in. Owners should be jailed with the drivers each time the driver is caught, that way it will get both drivers and owner to obey the law.

      MK - 2011-02-01 09:09

This is why Hi Ace = High Impact African Culling Equipment. They simply ignore the rule of law.

  • Mr.Glum - 2011-02-01 00:35

I had to laugh while reading this one... "proactive operations" do not start at the roadside mr cop and where is the application of the so called "zero tolerance"? This driver will continue to overload, drive on the curb, operate without a permit, etc., because they get away with it.

  • Sedick - 2011-02-01 00:53

One way of combatting this overloading issue is to work with the parents and the schools - the parents can prevent their children from being loaded into an overloaded taxi, and the schools can report the taxi driver when he arrives with an overloaded taxi at the schools........but that is too simple, and requires action from the public.........other than wasting time on bloggs.........

      christine - 2011-02-01 07:13

a better way would be for the authorities --who we pay -- to so their freeking job--like the trafic cops

      Wow! - 2011-02-01 07:29

      Kyle_logan - 2011-02-01 07:55

Most of the parents who's children drive in these taxi's dont have internet access, they also dont see what goes on with the taxi's and probably blame the police for making their children late for school and blame the police when their children die in accidents. Goverment needs to give the police back their power in regards to taxi drivers and their owners.... each time the police impound taxi's the drivers strike and goverment gives them their taxi's back... owners and drivers must be held liable for their negligance.

If i want to say I do not like Nelson Mandela, Julius Malema and the ANC, I just say it. And if one black asks "is it because i am bleck"? I say no, it is because all of you are previously disadvantaged. You see before the white man came to this continent, the black man built nothing not one bridge, nor a house out of bricks and cement with a foudation, no big buildings, no cars, no steel structures, thanks to white people coming here and building things, things that black people now claim because they see white people can build things that lasts.. Do yourself a favour Mr James and click on this link and watch the video coming from a black Pastor.. You see I only say these thing because i am being sarcastic, and know what is going on behind the scenes, i do not believe any news in the world, because everything we see there is what the people controling the world wants us to see, and not that what really is going on.. So i just be sarcastic and let everyone know how stupid blecks think...

  • betha - 2011-02-01 07:47

Last year, I was sitting in my local Municipal Manager's office when he asked a Traffic Officer why there was no action being taken against taxi drivers who were so blatently breaking the law. His answer? "We're too scared! They have guns!"

That is only half of his kids!

  • James - 2011-02-01 10:20

I trust the press will pick up on the potential murderer story and pursue it in the papers daily until the driver is locked away for ever never to return to the streets again. Press/journalists - here is an opportunity - do not let it slip out of the news like normally happens after a few days - 2011-02-01 10:27

They are too busy camping outside Mandelas house.
