Driver flees after running over metro cop

2013-01-10 22:13

Johannesburg - A Johannesburg metro police officer was run over and injured when he tried to pull over a car in Riverlea on Thursday.

"He tried to stop a white VW Golf after noticing that it did not have number plates.

The driver of the Golf knocked him down and sped away instead," spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

The 26-year-old officer was taken to hospital.

The Golf driver was still at large.

  • wreford.white.9 - 2013-01-10 22:44

I knew it. It had to be a white Golf. I'm willing to bet it was a GTI too. Either that or a BMW in disguise.

  • thomass.maumela - 2013-01-10 23:09

How abt calling 4 other police 2 close dis moron!

      michael.heys.3 - 2013-01-11 06:53

      tsiganagana - 2013-01-11 07:31

      @tsigangana. you mean non-model c public school

  • samacoba - 2013-01-10 23:18

At some point these guys need to realise that putting on a uniform does not give them super powers to stop a car with only a hand, they only human, for a car to make an immediate stop a whole lot of forces come into play,I dont know the selection criteria to be a Metro cop,but im hoping it at least includes Maths, with Physics being considerd an added advantage.Hope the guy recovers though, after this they should know better,As for the golf guy....

      dracolusus - 2013-01-11 12:20

I've had it a few times, where they attept to stop me, by WALKING OUT IN FRONT OF ME and I have to swerve to avoid hitting them. Some of them are just plain retarded when it comes to pulling people over.

  • melusi.toyi - 2013-01-11 00:07

i doubt that he/she was wearing reflective vest, if so he was at a an unavoidable spot

  • nyikamn - 2013-01-11 04:17

Occupational hazard.... When you catch him , take the car to scrapyard and the driver to prison , no need to go to the court just take the guy straight to prison and leave him there for five years. I know they will ru n over him everyday of his life

  • michael.mooketsi - 2013-01-11 05:52

i hope he ws nt hidin in de bush, only 2 come out late, spedy recovery mchana

  • nigelwp - 2013-01-11 06:31

Ppl dont see it. You should apreciate these officers. Instead you hate them. Good ones excl.

  • nigelwp - 2013-01-11 06:41

Change your attitude then this world would be a better place. That officer was enforcing the law. Evryday these officer's put their life in danger just 2 make these roads a safer place 4 u. Apreciate the good ones

  • muke.matshaba - 2013-01-11 07:27

Most of them just go to work for making lots of monies through bribes hence they r dragged on daily bases.u cant just come out of nowhere nd expect the driver to stop rite away.

      denise.herbst.5 - 2013-01-11 07:40

Yes Muke you can because that is the LAW!! Where did you buy your license?? If you had done the test then you would know that a traffic officers instructions must be obeyed over and above street signs. If this was in Riverlea then the speed limit would have been 60 or 80 - no excuse to not stop! And hitting someone with your car and then just driving away?? Pathetic excuse for a human being along with all the other idiots drivers who risk others lives everyday so they can get somewhere 5 minutes faster. I hope they catch this chop and jail him for life for attempted murder.

      muke.matshaba - 2013-01-11 08:28

True there @Devellyn but being knocked raises many questions, did the driver knocked him dilliberately or he came out from nowhere nd the driver was obstructed by other cars not to swerve nd avoid him in time?

  • Tshephangsithole - 2013-01-11 07:36

That serves him rite, u cnt stop a 4ton vehicle by being infrnt of it, stupid cops, wen r they gona learn. - 2013-01-11 08:48

If the golf had no number plates, that itself raises suspicion and the cop had every right to stop him. If a person accidently hits someone, you STOP and check what help the person needs, you don't drive away. Second very suspicious point. This golf obviously had something to hide, THAT is why the metro got hit. Lots of other people can avoid hitting them, why couldn't this guy...?

  • arthur.salvado - 2013-01-11 07:38

Sorry about the cop but I have a question. Was he alone ? Perhaps dropped off without water to hide and catch unsuspecting drivers. Did he suddenly jump in front of the car ? I often see these poor buggers being dropped off and they hide in some corner the whole day. No wonder a coke will get you out of trouble. A coke ANDa pie will get you out of serious trouble.

  • tsiganagana - 2013-01-11 07:38

Who said all the Golf are serviceable, it is clear that one had brake failure and the Traffic Officer was @ the wrong and wrong time as well. Next time respect the Golfy Butta!!

  • Stu.Hellfire - 2013-01-11 07:38

Might be unrelated, but you know how many white VW golfs(With blue lights) without number plates pull people over on the highways at night?

  • nettie.potgieter.5 - 2013-01-11 08:04

Most commentors show a total disrespec to the law and then everybody complain about the death rate on the road. Sies people!

  • - 2013-01-11 08:42

You people are ridiculous. These people are just doing their jobs- routine road blocks are essential. How many taxi's are pulled over during these roadblocks? You don't complain then. This guy in the golf could be the cause of an accident where someone dies, he could have had several guns in his boot that can be used to kill people during robberies, etc that the cops would find during these routine checks. I have had nothing but good service from the metros during roadblocks (I have only ever been stopped twice)- if your licence is not up to date or whatever, and if you feel the need to pay a bribe, you are just as guilty as the cops that take bribes. I hope if you are ever in an accident you don't have the audacity to expect the metros to come to your aid after the way you guys just complain about them.

  • yanga.maroloma - 2013-01-11 09:39

It makes one wonder, what are they teaching these rockies in the academy!!? Next time be visible, do not just jump from the bush infront of a moving car, you are not gods but law enforces. And always keep your vehicle ready for chase, mybe you would have got this golfy now. Nxa, cops!

  • justin.judson - 2013-01-11 09:47

Im on holiday in south Africa and joticed police stopping cars for speeding on the motorway!! Ive never seen anything so idiotic in my life!! Why put police at risk in this way? Do they not have number plate recognition etc in the country yet??

  • kagen101 - 2013-01-11 09:54

Well the traffic officer probably jumped right in front of the car...because that is theif newest thing. Twice they have come out right in front of my car, I either had to swerve or slam on breaks not to hit them. If they want to do that, hit them with car then!!

  • moi.carla.1980 - 2013-01-11 09:58

Hope the officer makes a speedy recovery.

  • stavious.mamatepa - 2013-01-11 10:43

One day this idiot will hit your family member and drive away. I wonder if you going to celebrate like you are doing. Was Burry Stander looking for a bribe also coz he was a victim of this reckless drivers? The vehicle ddn't have number plates it might have been stolen some where but you guys are not thinking about that all you thinking of is corruption

  • kobus.oosthuizen.58 - 2013-01-11 10:47

white golf? if it was a black golf, no mention of colour would have been made as that would be deemed racist. well done to the driver for successfully avoiding the obstacle in the road (to some extent)

      tsiganagana - 2013-01-13 13:59

kobus u r a mad cow, how on earth u make fun of the colour out of all this things happened. The Golfy was white n had no brakes!

  • John - 2013-01-11 12:08

ANYONE stepping in front of moving traffic is obstructing the flow of traffic causing a danger to the motorist, all road users following and the thick thug himself! That is why we have SAPS Act 68 of 1995! Learn it and APPLY it! The cop should NOT have been there!
