Johannesburg - A man was injured when his cattle truck overturned on the R64 between Bloemfontein and Kimberley early on Wednesday morning, paramedics said.

The articulated truck overturned around midnight on the R64, about 80km from Kimberley, ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said.

It took about seven hours to extricate the driver, in his late 30s, from the cab, using tow trucks and the jaws of life. He was taken to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein in a serious condition.

Several of the cattle were killed. Banks said a police vehicle on its way to the scene also struck one of the cows.

The road was still closed to traffic, Banks said shortly before 08:00.
