Drug smugglers nabbed at airport

Johannesburg - Seven people have been arrested for drug possession after disembarking from flights at OR Tambo International Airport, says the SA Revenue Service.

"In the past four days, the Sars customs team at OR Tambo International have prevented over 17kg of drugs from entering the country," spokesperson Marika Muller said on Monday.

Most of those arrested were South African citizens trying to smuggle the drugs into the country.

A man, who arrived on a flight from New Dehli via Doha was caught with 10kg of crystal meth, known as tik, on Friday.

"His luggage was searched and the drugs were found concealed in shoes, rolls of ribbon and lever arch files."

The tik had a street value of R3.7m, said Muller.

At least six people were also busted in separate incidents from Saturday to Monday.

"They all disembarked from flights that arrived from Sao Paolo, Brazil.

They carried at least 7kg of cocaine between them.

"Some of the drugs were concealed in body wraps under clothing and in luggage.

"One of them had wrapped the drugs in a shape of 'bullets' and had them inserted in the anus.

Some of the drugs were found discarded in one of the flight's sewer system."

All seven were handed over to the police, said Muller.

Hmmm ... If Jackie Selebi was still Police Chief, the headline would have read along the lines " ... 1.5kg found ..." we would not have known about the other 15.5kg's.

Think they should check out the mass amount of curry powder that landed at Waterkloof airbase on the Gupta flight with the Gupta entourage.... they might just find stuff for a good party at Sun City!!!

If foreigners come to our country with drugs we get all indignant and say how they should be locked up for ever but if S.A citizens get arrested overseas, it's amazing how so many S.Africans call for sympathy and government intervention. Lock them ALL up, I say!!

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-11-05 20:41

      Make an example of them.

      beverly.young3 - 2012-11-05 23:28

eish, for every few caught, there are hundreds that go undetected....sadly. I met a guy once who told me that he used to run drugs in Europe. He said he would simply walk through customs with $1 million in his boots.........(in drugs) braggart, I wish him ill......

      sachasea - 2012-11-06 02:32

Squeegee, how many more examples need to be made? Millions of lives have been ruined already and the use and trade in illegal drugs continues to increase unabated. The War on Drugs is a massive failure. We need to look at other ways of handling this issue.

Sasha my take on the drug trade is that where there is a demand there will be a supply. Drugs should be legalised, as should prostitution. I know this sounds crazy, but get a script from your doctor for your tik, dagga, whatever and the gangland killings etc will stop !

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-11-06 14:43

Sasha, banks are legal yet there are robberies...

  • kim.buren - 2012-11-05 20:12

Death Penalty for these goons. 10 kgs of meth can destroy so many lives.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-11-05 20:42

  • badladballie - 2012-11-05 20:50

Once again think of all the misery and crime this would have fuelled if they got their stash through. Zero sympathy and zero mercy for drug smugglers. They destroy lives so they do not deserve to live.

  • lynda.pitcher.1 - 2012-11-05 20:54

My wishes were if these goons were caught by the authorities in the Far East. I would have been very satisfied with justice meted out on these drug pushers.

These are drug mules the real dealers are probably holding their loved ones for ransom to force them to smuggle their drugs into our country

      lorna.brophy.52 - 2012-11-06 09:38

NO excuse to smuggle drugs, use drugs or deal drugs... Sorry!

      markmc83 - 2012-11-17 11:57

The drug mules are normally tricked into doing it, the real drug smugglers will never get on a plane with drugs, they basically manipulate young impressionable people into doing it for them. The problem is the high demand and price for drugs means that smugglers will go to any length to bring them in.

  • mphotant.thelejane - 2012-11-05 22:37

    In the anus! Tjo!

  • petr.valcik1 - 2012-11-06 08:45

How much is a ticket to China? I mean give them their drugs back and send them to China. That way we avoid all the trial costs and then feeding them in jail while they sit and do nothing. Except maybe keep Pappa busy. lol

  • lorna.brophy.52 - 2012-11-06 09:36

Pity the drugs didn't rupture inside his anus and take this scum of the earth off this planet.. These drug runners and dealers ruin young people's lives and desecrate families. Evil, evil, evil..

  • christina.setloboko - 2012-11-06 10:22
