Drug suspect speeds off, killing self, cop

2013-01-10 11:31

Johannesburg - A motorist who raced away while a policeman was in his car searching for drugs, killed them both when he crashed in Rosebank during a high-speed chase on Thursday, according to police.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said two police officers stopped the Audi R8 and searched it.

When they found a small amount of dagga, the driver sped off with one police officer still inside the vehicle. The other policeman gave chase in the police van.

"The Audi driver lost control in Rosebank and hit a tree, a wall and a light pole," said Dlamini.

The policeman and the motorist were declared dead at the scene.

Dlamini said the policeman's name would be released after his family had been informed.

    CRAZY!!!

      dienaakte.waarheid.7 - 2013-01-10 12:11

yes, lets legalise drugs, only backward hippies with no more braincells will advocate for legalisationb on a article about a 2 people dying. Go overdose you pathetic addict.

      thando.gqabaza - 2013-01-10 12:14

Hey liberals , maybe he had smoked already hence the stupid behaviour that resulted in 2 deaths ?

      Steven - 2013-01-10 12:18

excuse me, i wasn't advocating for legalizing drugs, I was merely stating all this could have been avoided considering it has been scientifically proven that marijuana on its own doesn't cause harm to the human brain or body. An addict? Not so sure who you are referring to here mate, but you can't overdose on weed. Stop getting your nickers in a twist and lift your head from the sand. Have you ever travelled to Europe? Try it and see. Most cops don't even care if you have a joint on you, but you don't see "backward hippies with no more braincells" roaming the streets...

      dracolusus - 2013-01-10 12:23

A person under the influence of THC is an infinitely safer driver than someone that is drunk. @dienaakte.waarheid.7...Maybe you should read the reports on legalization in Portugal. Drug use cut in half, HIV infection rates dramatically dropped, etc. Get your head out your ass.

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2013-01-10 12:36

The cops are untrained. When you search a car suspected of containing drugs, you handcuff the suspects and keep them outside the car. If the car and the suspects are "clean" you unshackle them and let them go. Learn from the Americans and the Aussies! We cannot lower the standards and legalize dagga because then you might as well legalize drinking alcohol and driving as well!

      rui.goncalves.50364 - 2013-01-10 12:46

@the gob: nothing has been proven. Until extensive clinical trials have been done you can't conclusively prove that marijuana doesn't have a negative impact. And as Thando point out...using dope affects your senses so to legalize it is probably a very bad idea... And fyi, my cousin committed suicide after smoking a strong variety of marijuana that affected him psychologically. The pre-existing psychological conditions is irrelevant....point is it wouldn't have been triggered rapidly had he not used the drug. So before you go along spewing your liberal nonsense, consider the consequences beforehand - stick that in your pipe and smoke it!!!!

      WarrenStylin - 2013-01-10 13:21

@Rui - He didn't commit suicide because of the drug. He had underlying problems that surfaces when he smoked. He more than likely would have done the same thing after getting drunk. So don't blame the drug. @Dienaakte - Only backward conservatives will not legalize marijuana. There are more medical benefits from Marijuana that most drugs you get over the counter. But due to people like you, they cannot be explored. Even the USA is starting to legalize Marijuana. Personally, I would rather my kids smoke Marijuana than drink alcohol.

      Steven - 2013-01-10 13:22

my condolences to you and sorry to hear about your cousin. Listen guys, Im saying that all this could be avoided with a little more open mindedness about all this. Even the US is opening up to marijuana. SA has a lot of problems and society here isn't ready for it, but i'd say that the cops and people in general are better served using their resources to tackle the bigger problems SA has. Don't blame weed for your cousins suicide mate, he had other problems, not trying to sound callous, but that's the truth bro. And alcohol by far is 10 times worse for your body and everyone around you than weed, yet its very legal.

      lownabester - 2013-01-10 14:49

But what I dont understand, he should have been standing, cuffed outside his car, while the cops did the searching???

      simon.pearce.790 - 2013-01-10 15:26

@the gob. "it has been scientifically proven that marijuana on its own doesn't cause harm to the human brain" Where did you find this little gem of mis-information?

      riad.mahomed - 2013-01-10 15:30

The headline should read more like “ Cop in SAP Van chases down drug dealer/user in AUDI R8” since it seems like the driver of this car, what was supposed to be a supercar, in fear of getting caught losses control and crashers…..it’s like me telling your that you can catch GAME fish in Zoo lake, fishy, very fishy……………

      @simon http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2008/06/23/0803601105.full.pdf The full report

      pieter.pan.184 - 2013-01-10 17:33

dienaakte.waarheid.7: Alcohol is a drug. If you consume just 12x more alcohol than it takes to get you drunk you will die. To overdose on dagga you would have to take 1000x the amount it takes to get you high. It is even less harmful than alcohol yet it is illegal, why?

      lacrimose.wolf - 2013-01-10 19:55

@lownabester - totally agree! Even if the law doesn't allow for 'cuffing, please move the driver away from the vehicle, remove the keys from the ignition.

Something is very wrong with this report. Here is an eye witness account of what happened https://twitter.com/SlyPod

      womba.wonder - 2013-01-11 01:30

Cannabis is as carcinogenic as tobacco when smoked. It impairs fine motor judgement very significantly and it also results in making substantially different perceptory and spatial judgements than when you are sober. You won't overdose on it. But most booze drinkers don't die of short-term acute alcohol poisoning (overdose) either. Overdosage is not the key risk. They usually die as a consequence of making a bad spatial/perceptory judgement when impaired (often involving crashing into something or being hit by something when in a place you'd avoid when sober.) One does this sort of thing under the influence of any mind-altering substance.

@ Womba and Simon: Care to share the studies showing that cannabis is as harmful as tobacco when smoked or that it causes brain damage for adults? Seems that the misinformation is on your side of the fence gents. Smoking anything is not good for you, yet the biggest study of it's kind found that cannabis did not negatively effect a users lungs. Here's a link, please make the effort to learn something new http://www.belowthelion.co.za/marijuana-myths-2/

      pieter.pan.184 - 2013-01-11 08:06

womba.wonder: annualy there are 1.8 million alcohol related deaths, many of which are from alcohol poisoning. In the US alone there are approximately 900 alcohol poisoning cases each week. Cannabis is far less carcinogenic than tobacco. A recent study also showed that cannabis smokers tend to show increased lung capacity. They aren't sure whether this might simply be related to the fact that cannabis smokers tend to hold their breath for prolonged periods.

The Gob, I can't believe you.. Whilst I agree with you in some part, a police officer lost his life here and you're bringing up something that a) won't happen (whether it should or shouldn't is irrelevant) and b) is on a completely irrelevant and ineffective forum. Have a tiny bit of respect bro.. Condolences to the policeman's family. May he rest in peace.

      Steven - 2013-01-11 10:04

letsallbefriends I apologise, really i do, it wasn't my intention to make this into a debate about mary jane. I do empathize with the families of the bereaved, i really do mate. All i wanted to say was that, this is such a waste of life over something that doesn't warrant it. Weed is not something people should be arrested for, that's my opinion.

      pieter.pan.184 - 2013-01-11 15:56

I was interrogated for 45 minutes when Rosbank police searched my car and found R21000 cash that I collected from a customer. I was told I was “money laundering and will be going to jail”. My lawyer arrived on the seen and they left me alone. I was scared – they made me feell like a criminal even though I am just a normal tax paying citizens. I send my condolences to the family of the police officer & the motorist but I can not help and think why the motorists driving a blue 2 million R8 speedster convertible (i happen to see the accident this morning on Oxford road) would try and run from the police for a small packet of dagga. Sadly I fear our police force... I do not trust them anymore, and my guess this motorist was threatened with jail so he ran... he was stupid to run, but some people do stupid things when they are scared. The R8 was split in two parts - they must have been going well over 180 when they hit that tree. The airbags came out but the seats were in a different part of the roads - a sickening sight. RIP to both

      Nico Du Rand - 2013-01-10 12:02

they try and make the charges sound worse than it actually is to intimidate citizens into giving them a bribe, while they get a nice power trip. that's why i dont like anything in this country with a badge, even if its just security, they always seem to think it gives them a right to intimidate and threaten others. anyway, driving with such a large sum of money is not recommended

      truthis.tway - 2013-01-10 12:15

If he was convicted then bye bye career. Especially if he was an lawyer or some other professional. He was literally running for his future.

      doberman.love.1 - 2013-01-10 12:33

I see news24 have just added the photos of this accident. Scary what I saw this morning! Seeing it again makes me sick. No one would survive the speed they were going!

      thato.o.moja - 2013-01-10 14:24

There is a detailed account of the accident from an eye witness. According to them the news 24 report is false. The witness claims to have seen the driver along with the policeman driving with the windows down being followed by the police van. Some would equate this to a negotiation between our men and woman in blue with the driver, perhaps a bribe. Others might say the driver was exercising his right to be stopped in a more public place, perhaps the Engen garage which is nearby. Questions that have crossed my mind are 1. Why was the policeman in the vehicle with the driver in the driver’s seat(moving or stationary) 2. What goes through your mind to run away from the police, that’s either really brave or extremely dumb. The unfortunate thing is that this ended in two deaths. Drug dealer or not, honest or dishonest policeman two people lost their lives. Two lives too many

The drill that I was thought when you search the car is: you ask driver to switch off the engine, you politely ask him to get out of the car and after that you and the driver start searching the car. The drill is very important, sometimes its called discipline. I was taught that during my Basic Military Training and I stil keep it like that. Drill/Discipline!

Gangs will lose a huge percentage of their incomes and incidents like the one mentioned in this article would not occur. All of you that are against the decriminalisation of marijuana are backwards, closed-minded dimwits. Any sane person would share Richard Branson's views.

The problem is people mix marijuana/dagga with other stuff. There is nothing smoking pure marijuana

@rui.goncalves.50364 - but it's OK that Alcohol is legal and weed is not?. Explain that logic. BTW it is only a matter of time. Phillip Morris, BAT are all getting ready to start selling it as soon as it becomes legal. Maybe not in backward SA or muslim coutries, nor countries that have laws against gay people. but for most of the civilized world it will become legal. And why not. If alcohol is, weed should be too. Have a hit today and be nice to someone!

Chances are that the cop and the suspect started to fight in the car which could have easily caused the accident. I just find it difficult to believe that someone driving a R8 would be overly worried about a small amount of dagga.
