Cape Town - Some of the best pictures that captured our sport history were taken by Duif du Toit, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula tweeted on Thursday as news spread of the respected photographer’s death.

The Gallo Images stalwart and multi-award winning photographer is understood to have suffered organ failure on Thursday morning. He was 57.

CEO Bruce Stewart said Du Toit had won numerous photography awards over the years.

"He was extremely respected in local and international photography circles and was a key part of our team," he said.

Kobus Wiese tweeted: "Very sad news, the passing of Duif Du Toit. A true legend in his game and a gentleman. God speed, my friend."

Cricket South Africa tweeted that they were deeply saddened by Du Toit’s death.

"RIP to a man who took some of cricket's finest moments."

Numerous users who had worked with Du Toit described him as one of the friendliest professionals.

"Thanks for the memories," tweeted the MyPlayers organisation. 

By 15:15, Du Toit was the second most trending topic on Twitter.
