Durban - An ANC official who received a memorandum of demands from Durban #FeesMustFall demonstrators on Friday, said the ruling party supported the students.

Demonstrators, made up largely of University of KwaZulu Natal and Durban University of Technology students, marched from Curries Fountain to ANC headquarters in the city centre.

Speaking to News24 upon receiving the memorandum of demands, ANC official Bheki Ntuli commended demonstrators for not being violent.

"We have not heard any reports of damages despite the long march they had. We appreciate that. They proved they are indeed leaders of tomorrow and they know what they want.

"Coming to the memorandum about no fee for tuition, the ANC is with them.

"This is the year of the Freedom Charter. Free education is enshrined in our documents.

"We have taken a decision to channel their memorandum to ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe and Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande. They did not stipulate a time frame. But we believe they would want answers by end of the year in time for registration next year.”

Meanwhile in Pretoria, scuffles have broken out at the Union Buildings after thousands of demonstrators attempted to break through temporary fencing. Demonstrators were demanding that President Jacob Zuma address them.
