Durban - A Durban flight school is counting the cost of a fatal crash which claimed the lives of two people on Tuesday.

The two were killed when a Cessna 172 went down next to the N2 freeway near Winklespruit, south of Durban.

Emergency service personnel arrived at the scene to find that the wreckage had burst into flames.

Durban Aviation Centre Chief Flight Instructor Jon Sargood confirmed that the plane belonged to the flight school, but would not comment further, saying they were still awaiting further information.

A source with knowledge of the incident, who requested anonymity, said the aircraft had taken off from Virginia Airport and had been flying to the "general flying area" where student pilots practise.

"We have checked with ATC [air traffic control] and their last call was as they crossed the Illovo River and as far as we know, it was their last communication," the source said.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the wreckage was located in a sugarcane field.

"It crashed about 20m away from the freeway and burst into flames and when emergency services put the fire out, the bodies were found," he said.
