Durban - A Durban medical student died in China after falling seven storeys while leaning over a balcony to speak to friends, the Mercury reported on Wednesday.

Mujahid Desai, a first-year student in Wenzhou, lost his balance, but managed to hold on to the railing for a few seconds, before falling on Monday.

The 19-year-old teenager was taken to hospital and put into a coma, but died hours later.

Desai was studying at the Wenzhou Medical College in Zhejiang province as there were no places for him at a medical institution in South Africa.

His parents, Idis and Zaida Desai, were travelling to China to bury their son.

Desai was planning to come to South Africa for his sister's wedding next week. His parents bought him a plane ticket to South Africa on Monday.
