Durban - Westville prison in KwaZulu-Natal is overcrowded and houses more than 9 000 offenders, regional commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele said on Friday.

"We have about 9 768 offenders but we are still overcrowded because the official capacity is 6 000," Nxele said.

Nxele was speaking during the visit of Correctional Services Minister Sibusiso Ndebele and national commissioner Tom Moyane to the prison in Durban.

"We normally have about 11 000 offenders, but because of the recent presidential pardon our numbers have decreased."

KwaZulu-Natal has six prisons, with 7 000 staff.

Has anyone ever given it a thought why mostly the previously disadvantaged are filling up prisons?? Due to the despondency that comes with unemployment one ends up comitting crime to sustain his family as a last resort. This doesn't apply to rapists. These are the effects of economic exclusion. The yuppies would have us believe that crime is something in the genes of black people. If it makes you sleep at night... Keep believing!!!

Bollocks. You think it is a natural thought progression of the human brain that no job = turn to crime? Absolute and utter rubbish. And murder? How about stealing some food if you're hungry. Do hear about people stealing a truck load of food? Socio-economic reasons are only a part of the issue, further than that it has become a worn out and very sad although perhaps convenient excuse.
