Toddler rape, murder accused in court

Five men accused of kidnapping, raping and killing two toddlers from Diepsloot are set to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

Johannesburg - A man has been arrested for allegedly raping an 8-year-old girl in Nhlapo section, Katlehong, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Sunday.

The 57-year-old man was arrested on Saturday, spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said.

"The police arrived in the nick of time to rescue the suspect from enraged community members who wanted to take the law into their own hands," he said.

Kgasago said the man's accomplice, a man believed to be also in his late fifties, was still at large.

"It emerged that the two suspects are known by the parents of the child and had been for some time using sweets to lure the child to the shack in Nhlapo section where they had been continually abusing her."

The Grade one pupil was taken to a clinic on Thursday after her teacher informed her mother that her daughter's school performance was declining drastically.

The clinic confirmed that the girl had been sexually molested.

The man was charged with rape.

He would appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court, east of Johannesburg, on Monday.
