Johannesburg - Economic Freedom Fighters MP Fana Mokoena and 18 others have been released from police custody after being arrested for trying to stop evictions in Maiden Farm, Mthatha, the party said on Sunday.

EFF chairperson Dali Mpofu told News24 that Mokoena and the group, including five women, were arrested on Friday night around 21:00 and released the following day.

"They were arrested for assisting the poor people in the area who were being evicted, even though they had a court order [against] the evictions," he said.

"The municipal officials took them to the police station."

He said the State decided not to prosecute the matter and the group was released around 14:00 on Saturday.

On Friday, Mokoena tweeted: "The KSD [King Sabata Dalindyebo] municipality has now arrested me for asking questions about another demolition they're conducting now as we speak #MaidernFarm"

He then tweeted: "After I spoke to the mayor who assured me they're awaiting a report before making any decisions, they came back and demolished #MaidernFarm".

On Saturday a picture of Mokoena and others inside a cell circulated on Twitter.

On Sunday afternoon, he tweeted: "#MaidernFarm is calm today. People quietly rebuilding. Aluta continua."
