Johannesburg - A jobless Eastern Cape woman has won a new car after sending 19 000 text messages - at a combined cost of R28 000 - in a competition.

"I sent 300 SMSes during the day and 300 at night," said Nomandiyephi Botha, from Lady Frere, on Wednesday.

She won a Citroen C1 worth about R130 000 in the competition organised by the SA Traditional Music Achievement (Satma) Awards in East London earlier this month.

The 33-year-old said she used R11 000 she had just received from a stokvel. Her husband, sister and brother also helped by getting her more airtime.

"I spoke to my husband and my siblings. They were fine with it. My husband is the one who supported me the most."

She said she sent the messages to vote for her favourite radio presenter, Saba Mbixane of Umhlobo Wenene FM. Each text message cost R1.50.

"I voted for Saba because I love him and his show. I never miss his show."

Mbixane was nominated in the tightly-contested category of best traditional music radio programme and best traditional DJ. He walked away with both awards for his Lavhutha Ibhayi show, which plays traditional music.

Botha said she started sending messages after hearing about the competition on the radio station.

A Satma official confirmed on Wednesday that Botha had won the car.
