Pietermaritzburg - Pietermaritzburg born and raised, Boni Mchunu has taken up her new position as general manager of East Coast Radio. Weekend Witness caught up with her on her life growing up in Pietermaritzburg, her family and her new power position.

Kagiso Media appointed Mchunu to head up East Coast Radio last month.

Mchunu joined the station from Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, where she served as marketing general manager for the past eight years.

Mchunu grew up in Imbali with four sisters and was raised solely by her father after her mother died at a young age.

“I believe in mentorship so much and my father Richard Hlela was my mentor. After my mother died he never remarried and dedicated his life to raising his girls the proper way,” said Mchunu.

A “multi-faceted” woman who believes education is key, Mchunu said she vowed never to be as poor as her parents were and always strove for higher goals even through school.

“I look back and it is so hard to believe how far one has come. I’m very proud that I am working for one of the flagship brands in KZN. I’m looking forward to building strong brand equity and to ensure that the station stays true to its role to inform, educate and entertain the KZN community,” she said.

When away from the office, Boni relishes her time with her husband and their three children.

“I’m also a very athletic person. I like running short distances but for 2016 I’m challenging myself to run the Comrades Marathon to celebrate the life of my late parents. I also like reading business and motivational books, women’s magazines and playing squash,” she said.

The goal-driven Pietermaritzburg woman says she is excited about her new venture at ECR and KZN is the province to be in.

“In KZN you see South Africa in one province. I love the warmth of the people of KZN, the diverse culture and warm climate. I love the fact that everything is within close proximity.”
